Breaking: PEBO picks Blair for Top Intel Post…

WaPo has the ROY on Blair’s imminent appointment…

Blair, the former commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, would become the nation’s third director of national intelligence, succeeding Mike McConnell as the leader of the 16 U.S. intelligence agencies. He had been the rumored front-runner for the job for several weeks.

“It’s definitely Blair,” said one congressional official who had been briefed on the selection. Both sources spoke on the condition of anonymity. The Obama transition team declined comment.

…Blair impressed Republican and Democratic lawmakers with his knowledge of the intelligence agencies and ideas for streamlining and improving the often unwieldy U.S. intelligence apparatus, the sources said. Blair had served during the Clinton administration as a military liaison at the CIA in charge of coordinating intelligence between the spy agency and Pentagon….

Majel Barrett Rodenberry passes away…

God Bless her, our prayers are with her son Rod and the friends and family. She brought much laughter and entertainment to so many people. She was an incredible inspiration to Gene and to writers and producers and fans as well. A powerhouse of an individual, she will be sorely missed.

Majel brought tears of laughter to my eyes playing Lwaxana, she was a large part of the incredible success and the humor of ST:TNG…

My favorite Majel role was of course, the irrepressible  Lwaxana Troi of ST:TNG:

PEBO adds Republican to cabinet: Ray LaHood R-IL gets Secretary of Transportation nod…greenies ‘weep’…

Illinois Republican Ray LaHood has been tapped by PEBO for Secretary of Transportation according to Ben Smith at Politico. Many seem appalled at the pick, and the failure to roll it out at the Energy presser, and there is apparently plenty in LaHood’s environmental record for them to complain about.  (I guess this means I won’t be getting my national monorail based on Disneyland’s layout) (warning HuffPo). I wonder how Pelosi is taking it?

This would seem to be a rather important appointment in light of the projections for PEBO spending in infrastructure, but it wasn’t rolled out with the Energy team…

Streetsblog has the scoop:

…The selection of a downstate Illinois Republican with close ties to highway lobby stalwart Caterpillar Inc. is being taken by many as a clear sign that progressive transportation policy is, for now, nowhere near the top of the Obama’s agenda.

“Obama still hasn’t made the transportation – land use – climate connection,” Petra Todorovich, director of Regional Plan Association’s America 2050 program said. “It’s clear he’s thinking about these things in separate categories.” For Todorovich and other advocates, the LaHood pick was the second shoe to drop this week. The first piece of bad news arrived on Monday when Obama trotted out his “green dream team,” his appointments to key environmental, energy and climate posts, and the transportation secretary was nowhere to be found.

Market Wrap Up: Dow closes down 200+…Big 3 loan stalled at WH…

As the closing bell rings the DOW is down 222 to 8603; NAS down 27 to 1552 and S&P down 19 to 885.

wall-street21

The NAS was down all say on downgrade of chip makers and Intel in particular got hammered when their price target was downgraded below $12..

DOW turned down after Standard & Poor’s decided to re-affirm GEs AAA rating, but simultaneously downgraded their credit outlook from stable to negative…Ironically, S&P rang the closing bell on the Nasdaq today…

…Sprinzen’s report reaffirmed GE’s present rating, but pointed to earnings pressure and the need for funding at GE Capital that forced management to revise its earnings guidance. S&P generated its own projections, Sprinzen said, and “it’s clear that this is going to be a pretty severe credit cycle.”..

You know what Franck Eggelhoffer would say don;t you? ‘Party pooper Standard and Pooor’s’…where were these jokers since 2003??

Update 2: Solis supports Card Check…PEBO selects Hilda Solis D-CA for Labor Secretary…

solis

Update Friday, 9:32 am: FOX reports Solis supports Card Check (Employee Free Choice Act). This may be a battle at her confirmation. Interestingly, HotAir noted yesterday that Al Sharpton is AGAINST Card Check..should be a lot of fireworks when these confirmation hearings get underway..PS Did everyone hear that Interior pick Salazar ALSO has that pesky Emoluments issue?? Yes, so if the CDS filled lozers want to block Hillary they need to block the Saxbe fix legality for Salazar too…were I they, I would pick my battles and take on the Card Check issue….

Update: 5:12pm EST: Reuters has it up now..

Congresswoman Solis site here, live video of her at work in the House opens when you go to site..

First elected in 2000, Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis is serving her fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. She represents California’s 32nd Congressional District, which includes portions of East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley. Prior to her election to Congress, Solis served eight years in the California state legislature. In August 2000, Solis became the first woman to receive the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for her pioneering work on environmental justice issues in California. (the Kennedy connection!! lol)

In 2003, she became the first Latina appointed to the powerful Committee on Energy and Commerce where she is the Vice Chair of the Environment and Hazardous Materials Subcommittee and a member of the Health and Telecommunications Subcommittees. She is also a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources. In March 2007, Solis was named a member of the newly created House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming.

Solis is Vice Chair of the Democratic Steering & Policy Committee and serves as a Senior Whip, as well as a Regional Whip for Southern California. She is also serving her third term as the Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’ Task Force on Health and the Environment.

In 2007, Solis was appointed to the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, as well as the Mexico – United States Interparliamentary Group.

The Princess and the Press…..

Caroline Kennedy seems to think she is entitled to her late Uncle’s (God Bless Bobby and John) NY Senate seat. What with her Op-Ed that helped launch a thousand rallies for PEBO and her turning over the keys to the kingdom and convincing Uncle Teddy to crown PEBO before the adoring masses in the run up to the Democratic Primaries, she apparently feels she now has ‘political experience’…

After all, she DID run the PEBO VEEP search committee which gave us the ground breaking pick of…….Joe Biden…

Uhm, yeah., Maybe not Caroline.

But wait! Fans tell us it would be so sweet, and she wrote books on Consitutional Law! Well so did Jeffrey Toobin of CNN and no one suggests HE would be qualified to hold the NYS Senate seat…

It is really all about the name, bottom line, and the endorsement for PEBO..

We are in a recession unlike any seen since..well frankly in my lifetime..inflation is low now, but I have no doubt that 70s era Carteresque inflation is coming in two years…Wall St brokerages have ceased to exist as we knew them..the commercial paper market is in turmoil….jobs are leaving NY in an exodus and taxes are going up..services are being slashed….we need Superman orwoman, we don’t need a painfully shy socialite with ZERO PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE in getting legislation passed..or even KNOWING the state and its needs…

caroline_kennedy_1

Living in Manhattan and attending charity balls and fundraisers does NOT, I repeat, does NOT give you experience in NYS politics ..

_44086279_ap203bodyleonaAlthough I’m sure they raise money for good things, like the wee furry wonders of the world, but we wouldn’t have wanted Leona Helmsley running NYS either and she gave to charity too, although her dog probably has enough dough to run a fabulous campaign for the seat in 2010, thus qualifying him under Democratic Party guidelines..

If being rich or famous and living in Manhattan was all it took, then Fran Drescher would get the seat (and Fran is, you know, more  ‘in touch’ with the people).  It may get you a seat at Bloomberg’s dinner table and a friend in the schools chancellor when you raise money at charity functions but it does NOT equip you to go toe to toe and FIGHT for the PEOPLE…(speaking of which we ALL know Bloomberg hates Hillary in large part because she FIGHTS him when she feels the people would be better served by not pursuing his agenda)..Hey think Bloomberg is looking for a rubber stamp, I do!

Gee think I have an opinion on this or what? HA!

I have been trying to let it go by without commenting but after the DISASTROUS appearances Caroline made in upstate NY yesterday, we need to talk…she confirmed what I had suspected, she has ZERO ZIP NADA ZILCH base of knowledge about the needs of NYS and the people who live and work there…

First of all, it is classless not to call Hillary. Secondly, to not call her and then  steal her theme of a conversation and listening tour and ASSUME that you are as experienced or frankly as good as Hill was a grave error on her part (maybe Caroline has been watching too much NBC and bought her own propaganda).

Hillary is a wonky goddess, she LOVES to learn, she LOVES to listen, she ACTIVELY listens and communicates and she went on tour after having learned all she possibly could…..Caro? not so much….(and PS anyone who is comparing this selection to Hillary get off it, Hillary was E-L-E-C-T-E-D- get it?)

How did her stop in Syracuse go? Surely the Mayors are all lining up to endorse the Princess?

WCBSTV: Afterward, CBS 2 HD spoke with Mayor Driscoll by phone. He said that although Kennedy was gracious, he wasn’t willing to back her candidacy … right now.

“I think it’s premature for me to say that,” Driscoll said. “I think there’s a lot of great candidates out there.

“But at the end of the day I think it’s important to have someone who represents you, knows New York State and really has an intimate knowledge of the state and upstate.”

What a novel approach!! SOMEONE WHO REALLY HAS KNOWLEDGE OF THE STATE AND UPSTATE!

Well how did the press handle it? Is the PEBO press bubble in which Caro traveled still in effect? Uhmmm no.

The black SUV pulled up to Syracuse city hall Wednesday morning.  It was stop one on Kennedy’s upstate tour.

-snip-

…reporters who wanted her to do more talking and less listening.  “But you’ve never held public office so what experience [do you have]?” one reporter asked. “You’re not going to answer questions at all?” one asked.

“Where you headed next?” another demanded.

“To the car.”( she replied)

Ohhhh snarky with the press, baaad idea Caro, you’re not in PEBO’s golden bubble anymore girlie, these are the rough and tumble snowbanks of upstate NY now….

Caroline said to the reporters, ask not what I can do for New York State, ask what New York State can do for me. Okay, so she didn’t say that, but if they make this appointment they may as well..(MiM).

Ich ben ien Syracusian! no she didnt say that either, but she should have, maybe she would get a laugh….

Pot claims Kettle is black: Alexi Giannoulias on Blago….

wc9_the_domino_effect

Update 5:25pm EST: CNBC has the video up.

Yes, it’s true. Alexi Giannoulias, Illinois State Treasurer, whose career was kick-started by PEBO, the youngest (and most inexperienced?) Illinois state treasurer, says on CNBC that Blago must step down because the lack of leadership is hurting Illinois debt (and it would be ever so helpful for Alexi and the rest of the Combine if Blago would just go away quietly, but he didn’t mention that part..).

Fitch Ratings has lowered Illinois’ credit grade to AA-. Illinois was apparently ‘forced to delay its plan to borrow 1.4 billion last Thursday’ when S & P placed Illinois on negative credit watch.

Illinois is the second state on negative credit watch, three guesses who is first? I betcha all got it-California.

‘JPMorgan has placed bids on Illinois bonds at interest rates four times the average’

The SHEER UNMITIGATED GAUL, the IRONY, the AUDACITY, of Alexi saying Blago is a bad bad man and this, this is THE best part:

Quote on the chyron from Alexi: THE COST OF CORRUPTION IS REAL

Oh gee, ya think? Ya think HE might know something about this case?? Hmmmmmm?? I have thought he was the one whose ‘rich family might buy him the seat’ since the day of the Blago bust…

From WaPo on the day of the arrest:

Assuming the seat is open, expect a contested primary fight between state Attorney General Lisa Madigan, state Comptroller Dan Hynes and state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulas — all three of whom were considering the race before today’s news. Madigan had been prominently mentioned as a possible appointee to the Senate seat but apparently was far more interested in running for governor.

Go to Alexi’s website for his Treasurer campaign and PEBO’s voice will automatically come on endorsing him.

What qualified Alexi for the very important role of Treasurer of the state of Illinois?

Well according to his website, he will use his, “financial expertise as a banking executive to make wise and sound investments for the people of Illinois’.

Get that? Wise AND sound. Well alrighty then!

From his campaign site:  “Prior to taking office, Giannoulias served as vice president and senior loan officer at Broadway Bank in Chicago’s Edgewater community. Crain’s Chicago Business rated Broadway the No. 1 Bank in Illinois for five years based on return on assets.”

Okayyy the family owned Broadway Bank, a-hem….nuff said there, go google, I like both my kneecaps the way they are….

Ross Kaminsky of the Denver Post has the real scoop:

Obama endorsed Giannoulias for State Treasurer when the latter was just 29 years old, but the NY Post reported that “Giannoulias is so tainted by reputed mob links that several top Illinois Dems, including the state’s speaker of the House and party chairman, refused to endorse him even after he won the Democratic nomination with Obama’s help.” Obama remained a big supporter and is credited with having been an important factor in Giannoulias’s victory.

But, as Crain’s asked, “[J]ust why did Sen. Obama last week endorse for Illinois treasurer an unknown 29-year-old whose financial experience is limited to working at a family-owned Chicago bank, and who, as recently as five years ago, was shooting professional hoops as point guard with team Panionios of Athens, Greece?”

Yes why would he?????

Obama and Giannoulias have been mutual supporters, politically and otherwise, for at least five years, with Giannoulias having contributed $7,000 to Obama’s campaign for the Illinois State Senate seat in 2003 and 2004, an interesting choice for a man who was simultaneously giving $17,000 to the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Giannoulias, who was called Obama’s “protégé” in a Chicago-based publication, has also served as the National Chairman of Greeks for Obama Committee. The organization’s Vice Chairman, Michael Karloutsos, also has a history of supporting Republicans, including a donation to Rick Santorum and Bush-Cheney ’04. He was also a Pioneer for President George W. Bush, meaning he raised at least $200,000 for the Bush-Cheney ’04 ticket. In the past year, he switched his party affiliation “from R to D”.

Giannoulias also hosted a fund-raiser for Obama in Chicago in September, 2007, omitting it from his public schedule and keeping it closed to the press. Could it be that Obama didn’t want the press asking questions about a New York Post article published that same morning entitled “Obama’s Mob-Tie $idekick”?

The NY Post story references the many questions about Giannoulias’ ties to organized crime through Broadway Bank, a Chicago bank that his family owns and where Alexi Giannoulias listed himself both as President and as Chairman of the Board on FEC filings surrounding the campaign contributions mentioned above.

According to a Chicago Tribune article from 2006, Giannoulias “has faced questions about the bank’s multi-million dollar loans to Michael Gioranago, a convicted bookmaker and prostitution ring promoter.” Barack Obama was quoted in the article as saying that he “is concerned by revelations that the bank owned by Illinois Democratic treasurer nominee Alexi Giannoulias’ family gave loans to a Chicago crime figure and said the candidate owes him and the public a full accounting.”

-snip-

Giannoulias also appears to have lied about the bank’s financing of a casino boat marina. And in what may or may not be an ugly coincidence, convicted felon Tony Rezko racked up $450,000 in gambling debts by writing bad checks on his Broadway Bank account. According to Crain’s Chicago Business, “Obama kept his 2004 Senate campaign funds” at Broadway Bank as well.

Giannoulias himself has accepted at least one controversial campaign contribution, from Spiros Naos, an owner of a line of gambling cruise ships, who got ownership of the company after his uncle “was gunned down in an execution-style slaying after selling the gambling fleet to a group that included indicted Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff”, according to the Chicago Daily Herald. After initially defending the contribution as one Greek helping another, Giannoulias eventually returned the money once the media began dogging him about it.

What we really need is a diagram of some sort to get a view of these relationships and financial interactions….hmmmmm….

Thanks Muckety!!!!! Go see the expandable diagram of these interactions here.

The Squawk Box staff asked Alexi if he would run for Governor or the Senate seat. Alexi laughed and said he doesn’t think he was ever really in contention (funny how many TOP CONTENDERS now say that ain’t it??) and said he wants to be a host of Squawk Box. Hardy har har, way to schmooze Alexi… wonder if Fitz will find you that amusing if you are ever called to account for some of these questionable (a-hem) interactions…..

An earlier appearance by Alexi discussing how ALL the states should make money, OH GOOD GRIEF SOMEBODY SAVE US!!! is here (and oh yeah he is ANOTHER bball partner of PEBO..betcha all those Wharton Business grads are kicking themselves and wishing they had spent more time on the blacktop instead of in study hall……)

You can take the PEBO out of Chicago but you can’t take the Chicago out of the PEBO? I hope not…..

Go see Alexi’s BarackBook page here
