A Nightmare on Elm Street reviews…

Ouch. First  Spill:

IGN:

Then the NYPost, Kyle Smith:

…To the audience suckered into paying to see this, here’s why your generation sucks. A book for first-graders by Carl Reiner was called “Tell Me a Scary Story, But Not Too Scary.” Young adults going to this movie are, mentally, first-graders with a higher tolerance for gore.

Going in, you know the story and pretty much what’s going to happen in every scene (Freddy is going to pop up in varying settings). A girl gets in the bathtub and everyone waits for the finger-knives to appear so they can issue a properly prepared-for shriek. That’s pretend scared.

Now that there have been eight Freddy movies, 12 Jasons and 10 Halloweens, it might be time to declare that kids like to see the same stuff over and over. (When Generation X sat through all this, at least it was new, or new-ish.) But just as you can’t tickle yourself, you can’t really be scared unless you honestly don’t know what’s next. Teens are so uncertain all the time that they crave movies where everything is as pre-arranged as soccer practice. When you start to notice that full-on predictability has become unpleasant to watch, you might just have arrived at the moment of your moviegoing maturity.

Though Freddy is basically the same guy as in the 1984 original, his back story is different. For a few minutes the movie threatens to become interesting — then retreats. (Mild spoilers follow.)…

TGIF!! 82nd Airborne makes ‘Lady Gaga’ video…

God Bless the troops! Glad to see them letting off steam and having some fun!

TSG:

In what may be the most entertaining music video homage ever shot in a war zone, a group of American soldiers stationed at a military base in southwest Afghanistan star in a lip-synced version of Lady Gaga’s hit “Telephone.”

The video, which yesterday began to spread online, was filmed recently inside what appears to be a garage at the Forward Operating Base in Farah Province.

Posted to YouTube a week ago, the 3:45 production–complete with props, signs, and costumes–features an all-male cast from the 82nd Airborne Division.

The video, which can be viewed above, was the brainchild of Aaron Melcher, a married 24-year-old soldier who graduated in 2004 from North Carolina’s Gramercy Christian School. Melcher opens the video in a pas de deux, of sorts, with fellow enlistee Justin Baker, who is not nearly as enthusiastic a dancer as the gyrating Melcher, who incorporated elements of the original video’s choreography in his desert remake..

Market Movers Friday: Goooooooold! Q1GDP, GS…

Update: Calculated Risk expands on the GDP number and the PCE:

…Here are some Q1 numbers (all annualized):

  • Personal consumption expenditures (PCE) increased $130.7 billion
  • Personal saving declined $88.5 billion.
  • Government social benefits to persons increased $61.1 billion. So the boost in PCE came from the decline in saving and the increase in benefits. That is not sustainable….
  • Up $11.40 to $1180.20….likely on Greece fears and the PCE number

which finally showed some inflation- (hiring costs rising)..

    …you know what that means…it’s been a while….

PS it has leaked that the Feds have a criminal probe into Government Slacks…poor bastards really bet on the wrong horse didn’t they? GS down another 7% to 148, several firms putting hold or sell ratings on now…

1Q GDP came in at 3.2%, slightly below expectations

    Consumer Sentiment fell in April
