Update 3/16/11: As we have all feared, Obama’s dithering and the vacuum of leadership in the world that results has allowed Qadaffi to launch what his troops have announced will be the ‘cleansing’ of Benghazi.
…A sample quote via the Journal from a Libyan man who had to flee Ajdabiya with his kids when Qaddafi’s goons rolled into town: “Tell Obama I’m pleading with him—launch just one airstrike here. Prove that Gadhafi was wrong when he said that America only cares about business interests, not human rights.”
Continues after the break:
Attorney General Eric Holder told an audience in Colorado Thursday afternoon that he still favors trials in a federal civilian court for the five Guantanamo prisoners accused of involvement in the 9/11 attacks, including the plot’s alleged mastermind, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.
POLITICO’s Manu Raju, who’s attending the Aspen Ideas Conference where Holder was interviewed by CBS’s Bob Schieffer, says the attorney general was plain about his recommendation. He seems to have been plainer than he has been in public on that point since January, when his first decision in favor of a trial in Manhattan was scuttled by the White House due to local objections.
Holder said no new decisions have been made but that he’s still recommending going the civilian route, Raju reports. The AG said the civilian court system “has proven effective in a wide range of cases over the last 200 years. Why can’t we use that system?”
Asked about holding such a trial in Virginia, Holder said “there are any number of possibilities” that state, local and federal officials are discussing.
Holder also said there is some uncertainty surrounding the availability of the death penalty at military tribunals….
Bloomberg has it:
The United Nations Security Council voted to impose new sanctions on Iran that restrict financial transactions, tighten an arms embargo and authorize the seizure of cargo linked to its nuclear or missile programs. The 15-nation Security Council voted 12 to 2, with one abstention, to adopt a resolution that freezes the assets of 40 companies, banks and government agencies, and bars the foreign travel of Javad Rahiqi, head of a branch of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran. Turkey and Brazil voted against the measure, and Lebanon abstained from the vote….
…The new round of penalties, the fourth set of sanctions imposed on Iran by the Security Council, is aimed at blocking Iran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons and pressuring the country to join international talks….
Hillary demonstrates her command of the most important issues facing us on national security. FF to 35 mins in for Q/A from the audience.
HRC answers how we will maintain our nuclear arms in START, how we are dealing with Iran, NOKO, how they kept the Dubyah NoKo method of dealing with them b/c it makes sense, Iran, China working with them on sanctions now that Russia is on board, how other diplomats abroad were not even considering sanctions as diplomacy and we pushed them on that.
She says she is a realist and we will always have nuclear weapons and we must maintain and upgrade the existing weapons to ensure their use as a deterrent is effective.
She discusses normalization of relations with Cuba and the Castro Brothers resistance to this as well. She says it is her personal belief the Castro brothers do not want to normalize relations b/c it would end their excuses for the hold they have over their people. She says democracy will come to Cuba, it is coming. She discussed how an American was arrested in Cuba recently and a Cuban prisoner who died of a hunger strike recently. She says for the first time a lot of countries realize it is not the USA preventing Cuba from normalizing and expanding its economy and international relations.
Love this woman.
Update 4: we did it! with DeMint’s moneybomb and the stimulus moneybomb we passed the target! From the Rubio Campaign:
This week, we marked the first anniversary of the Crist-Obama stimulus rally by achieving our goal of raising $1,000 for every $1 billion wasted by the stimulus plan. With your help and the support of Sen. Jim DeMint’s Senate Conservatives Fund, we raised more than $860,000 in just 10 days from 11,000 donors through the Stimulus Bomb. Together, we sent big government proponents like President Obama and Governor Crist a message that we cannot continue spending money we don’t have and that a return to limited government principles is what will make America strong and prosperous. With the primary still 6 months away, now more than ever we must promote conservative values and endure in our efforts.
In Case You Missed It:
- Charlie Crist has repeatedly declined requests from Marco for a debate of the issues and ideas most important to Floridians. This week, FOX News tried their luck by inviting both Marco and Crist to participate in a nationally televised debate on March 28th. Marco immediately accepted, while Crist remains undecided.
- On Wednesday, FreedomWorks PAC marked the one year anniversary of the Crist-Obama rally with their own rally, which featured Marco. You can watch a short excerpt of his speech here.
- This week, we also launched a new text messaging campaign. Don’t forget to sign up for updates on your mobile phone by texting MARCO to 69467.
