Joseph Cao defeats 9 term indicted Jefferson D-La ..

In the last of the elections, today in Louisiana, Joseph Cao, running for the Republican seat, defeated the 16 count-indicted Congressman William Jefferson. Turnout was down as expected in the traditional Democratic base, allowing the relative unknown to take a traditionally safe Democratic seat.

My voter registration card still says Democrat, but I am very happy Cao has won, it is a win for the people he will represent IMO. Joseph Cao is a local resident who was born in Saigon (and who has rebuilt through the past two hurricanes).

Cao came to the U.S. as a child after the fall of Saigon in 1975. He went on to earn degrees in philosophy, physics and law.

Turnout appeared low in the election delayed because of Hurricane Gustav.

NRO, spoke to Cao before the election, he is a traditional Republican, but with very pragmatic views that should work for his residents:

…NRO: What have been the major issues driving your campaign in this race?

CAO: Reform — reform of the image of Louisiana, good government, and accountability. Also, I’ve campaigned on coastal restoration after the hurricanes, and health care. . . . The whole question of conservative and liberal is really not that relevant in this race. For me, the emphasis, again, is in the rebuilding, the progress in the second district, and that’s what I’ve been emphasizing. I can be conservative on some issues and liberal on others…

Cao, a conservative attorney who is pro-life and favors low taxes and gun rights, has worked hard to make a non-ideological case for himself in this week’s election by promising to restore integrity to the office Jefferson has sullied. He has been endorsed by the New Orleans Times-Picayune

On the district’s need for new representation:

NRO: Do you think that William Jefferson has been a good representative for your district?

CAO: Obviously not. He’s been stripped of all his committee assignments. He’s been a very poor representative. For the last three and a half years, nothing has been done by him. He has put through exactly one bill in the last three and a half years, and it was a bill to change the name of a post office. If you’re talking about effective representation — well, no. There has effectively been no representation of this district at all for three and a half years now…

I am happy the people of the district are getting representation, and I hope the infrastructure plans for the January stimulus untie the NOLA funding so LA can get back to living and playing and loving and cooking.
