Happy Birthday Motown: The Big 50!!!

From Rolling Stone:

Today marks the official 50th anniversary of Motown Records, and members of some of the label’s most famous acts were on hand in the Motor City to help kick off what will be a year-long celebration for the famed label. The Four Tops’ Abdul “Duke” Fakir and members of the Miracles, Martha & the Vandellas and Rare Earth will spend the week at the Motown Historical Museum, housed in the original Hitsville Headquarters. Plus, today was officially named Motown Day in the city of Detroit.

From NME:

One of the world’s most important and iconic record labels, Motown, celebrates its 50th birthday today (January 12).

The Detroit label – home to Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes and The Jackson 5, among many others – was founded by record producer Berry Gordy on January 12, 1959.

Gordy started the label, which was originally called Tamla, with an $800 loan from his family.

The first act signed was called The Matadors (later The Miracles), who’s lead vocalist was Smokey Robinson.

Motown‘s Hitsville USA studio, a garage that Gordy purchased and renovated, was famed for its ‘production line’ recording process – with classic songs being churned out on an astonishingly regular basis.

From 5122949:

“My Girl”, released December 21, 1964, is a 1965 number-one single recorded by The Temptations for the Gordy (Motown) label. Written and produced by Miracles members Smokey Robinson, and Ronald White, the song became the Temptations’ first U.S. number-one single, and is today their signature song. Robinson’s inspiration for writing this song was his wife, Miracles member Claudette Rogers Robinson, and he originally intended to have his group record the song,The recorded version of “My Girl” was the first Temptations single to feature David Ruffin on lead vocals.

Previously, Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams had performed most of the group’s lead vocals, and Ruffin had joined the group as a replacement for former Temptation Elbridge “Al” Bryant. While on tour as part of the Motortown Revue, a collective tour for most of the Motown roster, Smokey Robinson caught the Temptations’ part of the show. The group had included a medley of soul standards in the show, one of which, The Drifters’ “Under the Boardwalk”, was a solo spot for Ruffin. Impressed, Robinson decided to produce a single with Ruffin singing lead. After some persuasion from Ruffin’s bandmates, Robinson had the Temptations record “My Girl” instead of The Miracles, and recruited Ruffin to sing the lead vocals.

“My Girl” climbed to the top of the U.S. pop charts after its Christmastime 1964 release, making it the Temptations’ first number-one hit. The single was also the first number-one hit on the reinstated Billboard R&B Singles chart, which had gone on an eighteen-month hiatus from 1963 to 1965. The success of this single launched a series of Ruffin-led hits, including “Since I Lost My Baby” and “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg”. The former background figure quickly became the group’s main (and, excepting irregular leads by Kendricks and Williams, only) lead singer by the end of the year. Unfortunately, after this hit as well as Ain’t Too Proud to Beg, Ruffin started to develop a large ego. He was later fired from the group (see the Temptations main article for more details).

In 2004, “My Girl” was ranked number 88 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.[1]

Breaking:Burris certified by Senate…will be seated…Lonesome Loser Reid strikes out again….

Yes, Harry Reid has once again, folded like a cheap suit.

Update: Official walkback statement now out via ACE HQ and ChicagoTribune/WGN:

“Barring objections from Senate Republicans, we expect Senator-designee Burris to be sworn in and formally seated later this week,” said a joint statement from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin.

The Senate Democratic Leaders had told Burris last week that he needed to testify before the Illinois House impeachment committee about his relationship with Gov. Rod Blagojevich and submit a signature from Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White certifying his appointment by Blagojevich.

“We have spoken to Mr. Burris to let him know that he is now the Senator-designate from Illinois and as such, will be accorded all the rights and privileges of a Senator-elect,” said the joint statement.

Breaking now on FOX, (confirmed by Carl Cameron says Cavuto FWIW…)

“Burris certified by U.S. Senate Officials to Fill Vacant Seat…”

You know what we would say back in Brooklyn don’t you? That was mighty white of them…

Sorry but hell it was a witch hunt by the end and Reid had NO BUSINESS pulling this parliamentary CRXP, when

a. The US Senate, despite what some may suppose, does NOT have the right to question the appointment/election of a Senator that has been certified by the state under the requirements of the state’s constitution, beyond the general eligibility requirements

b. Frakin Harry better git his axx to work on Nevada’s foreclosure crisis or maybe go sit in the frakin meetings with Summers and Geithner and see WTH is going on and write a plan, you know show some LEADERSHIP on the real issues..

but where did wrong way reid lead us?? Bravely off into a FRAKIN DEAD END YET AGAIN..

And congratulations to Senator Burris who should have been seated two weeks ago and at the latest Friday after IL SC confirmed the SoS has ALREADY certified Burris via the entry into the state records…

Madoff Bail NOT REVOKED!! Off the wires…oh SNAP! I call BS!!

UPDATE 2: Newdsday gets it up:

Bernard Madoff won’t be going from the penthouse to the jailhouse before trial.

A judge Friday decided not to revoke the accused Wall Street swindler’s $10-million bail.

Magistrate-Judge Ronald Ellis’ ruling comes after prosecutors argued Madoff was a flight risk who was trying to protect his assets from investors burned by his alleged $50 billion-dollar fraud.

Law enforcement officials said hundreds and potentially thousands of victims were fleeced by Madoff, many losing their life savings.

Madoff has been confined to his $7-million Manhattan apartment under armed guard since his arrest last month. He faces as much as 20 years in prison and millions in fines if convicted.

UPDATE: A GREAT point raised on CNBC, the money going to pay for all the guards making sure he doesnt flee, is being paid out of MADOFF funds, yeah the VICTIMS are paying to help keep him free..

And people wonder why some of us feel there is a CLASS ISSUE in this country?! Pulleeze…

CNBC covering it live

Background from AU Herald Sun:

The FBI alleges Madoff has confessed to running a pyramid – or Ponzi – scheme worth $70 billion, which, if proved, would make him history’s biggest swindler.

And while it is a cliche to say Madoff’s victims “read like a Who’s Who” – in his case it is literally true.

Film directors Steven Spielberg and Pedro Almodovar, actors Kevin Bacon and wife Kyra Sedgwick, screenwriter Eric Roth as well as Hollywood mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg and Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel are the best-known celebrities to emerge so far from the wreckage of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities.

Madoff has also inflicted damage to the rich across European and American high society.

The names of the victims keep trickling out – Spain’s richest woman, Alicia Koplowitz, was clipped for almost $20 million, Liliane Bettencourt, the 86-year-old heiress to the L’Oreal cosmetics empire, lost an undisclosed sum, while in Austria, Bank Medici founder Sonja Kohn was this week forced to deny she was in hiding from her far-from-thrilled Russian clients as the Government took control of her bank, which had lost over $4.2 billion.

In the US, Walter Noel, the financier-socialite with houses in New York, Palm Beach and the island of Mustique is under a big cloud for shovelling billions to Madoff through his hedge fund.

Prosecutors said that the gifts were grounds to have his bail revoked because what’s left of Madoff’s assets will eventually be returned to burned investors. Madoff’s lawyers called the sending of the gifts an innocent mistake.

Madoff has been confined to his penthouse around the clock — the only exception being court appearances — and under constant guard as part of his release.
