Stimulus Unemployment Benefits: OH extends UE, Gov Strickland adds language to Transportation Bill
Yay for OH:
…Ohioans who exhaust their jobless benefits will be eligible for 20 more weeks of assistance.
Tucked into the monstrous transportation budget approved by state lawmakers yesterday was a provision changing Ohio unemployment law, a move necessary to qualify for the additional compensation.
Up to 20 more weeks of benefits will be available to Ohioans who have exhausted their unemployment compensation after Feb. 22, said Dennis Evans, spokesman for the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, which oversees the state’s unemployment compensation program…

The additional extended benefits will start being distributed in about six weeks since it will take that long for state regulators to make the necessary updates to their computer system, Evans said.
The benefits will be paid retroactively to Feb. 22. In addition to the extended benefits, unemployed Ohioans soon will receive an additional $25 a week in compensation. Benefits now average about $300 a week.
Evans projected that jobless workers will start receiving the higher compensation in May, with payments retroactive to Feb. 17. Like the 20-week benefit extension, the federal government is paying the entire $25 increase.
To speed passage of the change in state law, Gov. Ted Strickland had urged lawmakers last week to include the provision in transportation bill — which they did.

Come on Obama!!!! I voted for you. I have been unemployed for a year and am about to lose everything I have ever worked for. I have a Healthcare degree, and I still cant find a job. So before you go handing out money for school loans and getting everyones hopes up with an education, companies have to be hiring. Please help us!!! I have two children, and I do not have anywhere to turn. Pass this extension and get some of our money back from those crooks at AIG!!! Help the poor not the rich, it is the Democratic way. Were desperate!!!

Make sure you are looking around at some of the other services your county offers. Some of those services are provided by the government and others are from private grants. I’ve been out of work for almost 7 months now and found some assistance to pay my gas and electric bills. I wasn’t eligible for state food stamps (apparently I earn way too much on unemployment) but since my wife and I have a new baby (arrived 2 weeks after being unemployed) she was eligible for food stamps from WIC. Hang in there everyone…and put your hope in the Lord to help all of us through these tought times.

I called the Ohio DJFS to ask questions about the 20 week extended benefits that was part of the transportation bill, and the gentleman I talked to had not heard a thing about it. The 2 extensions that are currently running are the only ones he claims Ohio has. I am not surprised that a phone processing person might not be aware of this but it sure didn’t make me feel secure especially since I will receive my last Tier 2 payment next week.

Mr. Cron, I was reading up on this, you should call 1-877-644-6562 or visit http://unemployment.ohio.gov.
It looks like if you have exhausted your benefits, you will be given instructions on how to file for the extended benefits, which looks to be like an extra 20 weeks at this point, plus you should start to receive that extra $25 per week, which will be helpful. I’m sorry, wish I could be more helpful about how to pay your bills in the meantime, it doesn’t seem to be an issue with our politicians, does it? Rob Peter to pay Paul is how I live. Once you’ve robbed all three, what next?

My unemployment is about to run out in 2wks. The Ohio Unemployment hasn’t contacted me or other people who are ready to run out. What is the problem and the hold up? I have bills to pay and I feel I and others have the right to know what is going on. Please sent me some information soon concerning this matter.
