Update: Supreme Court Justice David Souter to Retire…

*

Update: Ace has coverage of likely replacements, I havent seen anyone mention Cass Sunstein TOTUS’ BFF who is also married to TOTUS adviser and galpal Samantha Power…..

To go look at ruling and other fun SCOTUS stuff check out OYEZ.org. I spent a lot of time on that site when I took Constitutional Law….you can sort by Souter…Souter is a G H W Bush appointee who went ‘rogue’ on them and voted as a ‘liberal’ appointee might.Born in 1939, sworn in 1980…

Souter Bio from OYEZ:

Biography:

A man of unusual and peculiar sensibilities, David H. Souter came to the Supreme Court as a complete enigma. Souter, who received his nomination to the Court from President George Bush only months after his promotion to a federal appeals court, lacked a public reputation. As a result, the press labeled him the “stealth justice,” an unknown judge with uncertain values. Conservatives praised Souter as a restrained jurist and predicted that he would bolster the right-wing bloc of Antonin Scalia and William H. Rehnquist. The Bush White House assured the Republican far right that Souter would be a “home run.” Liberals, on the other hand, hoped secretly that the Bush nominee would fail in expectations and emerge as a surprise to his sponsors. To this day, Souter has avoided validating either camp. The Free Congress Foundation, an organization dedicated to coordinating support for conservative nominees, has called their optimistic predictions “miserably inaccurate.” The Women’s Legal Defense Fund, a liberal group for the advancement of women’s rights, staged protests at various times against Souter and has expressed dismay at his votes. The unhappiness of both political extremes speaks volumes of the quirky justice. To this day, Souter has demonstrated a moderate jurisprudence though he has not appeared afraid to wander deep into either camp along the political spectrum. Court watchers continue to be amused by Souter’s eccentric habits and behaviors.

Michelle Bachmann wins one against ACORN…

Awesome Rep. Bachmann! and Frank actually APOLOGIZED to ACORN, pathetic! From Politico:

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), who spent much of Wednesday battling the GOP over the bias crimes bill, is offering a big mea culpa for failing to kill an amendment by Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN since Politico wont tell you) preventing ACORN from getting federal funds because they have members who were indicted for voter registration fraud.  passed by the House.

“I made a mistake yesterday in not objecting to the Bachmann amendment. I did not read it carefully, and it was in the last minute that the amendment was accepted. It is a deeply flawed amendment and I am opposed to it,” said Frank, the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee.

“Banning people from possible participation in government programs based on an indictment is a violation of the basic principles of due process, and I intend to offer a corrected amendment when the bill comes to the floor of the House next week.”

No word from Barney Frank on how Stimulus Money was SPECIFICALLY legislated OUT of Blagos hands since he considers “banning people from possible participation in government programs based on an indictment is a violation of the basic principles of due process”. I guess only SOME bills need to meet the basic principles of due process….Maybe Rep Frank needs to speak to Rep Kirk and Rep Foster on their bipartisan amendment to strip Gov Blagojevich who was not even indicted at the time of power over stimulus funds!!!!

HYPOCRISY THY NAME IS BARNEY FRANK

TSCC: Sarah Connor Chronicles the Fan Fave to Bring Back for Another Season….

*

From zap2it:

If you, the Zap2it readers, were in charge of network scheduling for next season, then all the talk about “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” and “Chuck” being on the bubble for renewal would disappear. The two series have emerged as the overwhelming favorites in our Keep ’em or Kill ’em polls of 27 series that we think could go either way when the networks announce their 2009-10 schedules over the next few weeks…

…”Terminator” fans mobilized heavily to vote in their show’s poll. As of 2 p.m. ET Thursday, the show had racked up 26,553 votes — more than twice as many as any other show on the list — and 86 percent of them (22,711) say FOX should keep the modestly rated show (5.3 million viewers this season) on the air….

iNotice ‘Chuck’  ““Chuck” – Keep it: 80%, Kill it: 20% (11,495 votes)”: has only HALF the votes of TSCC ““Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” – Keep it: 86%, Kill it: 14% (26,553 votes)” and Dollhouse  falls a short third ““Dollhouse” – Keep it: 64%, Kill it: 36% (10,123 votes)”  And as for Chuck,  who is NBC kidding, they have ONE hit show they are gonna cancel it? Mnn I think not. Mobilize for TSCC!

Go vote for TSCC on the Zap2It OnTheBubble poll here, (it is a dropdown menu)

Also the E! vote is getting some buzz on TVbytheNumbers and the Sun Sentinel:

…E! is spearheading one of the more prominent crusades. Supposedly the leading vote getters are Chuck, Dollhouse, Life, Privileged and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

…By the way, I think E!’s finalists might be designed to make it appear the campaign is successful. There are at least a couple of series on the roster of finalists that have a decent chance at renewal absent any campaign….

NO FATE, FIGHT THE FUTURE WITHOUT TSCC IN IT, SAVE TSCC

Stimulus Unemployment Extension Update: FL & VA….

FL: Sun Sentinel:

Florida Gov. Crist is expected to sign a bill that would extend unemployment benefits by up to 20 weeks for Florida’s eligible unemployed residents. The additional benefits would be paid to eligible Floridians laid off up until Dec. 27 this year, with benefits being paid through the week ending Jan. 2., 2010.  For those who have exhausted benefits, the bill would give retroactive extended benefits, as long as their benefit year did not end before Feb. 22.

The extended benefits, costing an estimated $418 million, down from an estimated $777 million, would be paid for by the federal government via the economic stimulus package….

…”It helps extends the benefits and it uses federal dollars. It’s a win-win for Florida and those on unemployment,” Sterling Ivey, the governor’s press secretary, said Wednesday.

VA: Arlington Connection:

…For now, Virginia has said thanks but no thanks to $125 million stimulus funds made available to the commonwealth’s Unemployment Trust Fund. But legislators are bracing themselves for the possibility that Democratic Gov. Tim Kaine might call a special session to overturn the Republican rejection of the stimulus money. Meanwhile, as the governor tries to line up GOP support behind expanding unemployment benefits to part-time employees, Republican leaders convened a press conference to spotlight businesses that oppose expanding benefits….

THE FIGHT OVER expanding unemployment benefits has taken a sharply partisan tone since the General Assembly’s veto session on April 8. Since the General Assembly had convened in February, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act made $125 million available to the Unemployment Trust Fund. But only if the rules were changed in Virginia that restricted unemployment benefits to full-time workers and people enrolled in a state-approved training program. Last week, Howell assembled a handful of business owners to stand behind the Republican argument for limited government….
