YGN: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Review

Now that Mat and Nat have seen the film what do they think?

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Review by YourGeekNews:

Now that Matt has read all the books along with Nat, the tag-team fury of two Potter-heads trying to review Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince as the best film in the series before going on a tirade about the faithlessness of adaptation… well it might just blow your mind as much as it did ours.In any event, we’ve never loved and hated a Potter film more than this one, so keep giving us YOUR thoughts, since we’re all the kind of geeks who were sitting there at 12:01 when the lights went down and the applause began!~Matt + Nat

CC2Ks Big Ross: Advance Review: G.I. Joe – The Rise of COBRA…

GIJOEPosterCC2Ks Big Ross gives a review:

…As indicated by the title, this movie doesn’t tell the origin of G.I.JOE so much as it tells the origin of COBRA.  The G.I.JOE team is firmly established and operational at the film’s start, and COBRA as the terrorist organization everyone loves to hate doesn’t exist yet.  Even so, James McCallum/Destro (Christopher Eccleston), The Baroness (Sienna Miller), Zartan (Arnold Vosloo), and the mysterious Doctor (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) are in the final stages of a sinister plot for world domination (if you think that’s a spoiler, obviously you’ve never watched the old G.I.JOE cartoons.  Attempts at world domination are their bread and butter.).  The world’s only hope to stop them is (you guessed it) G.I.JOE.

We’re introduced to this international military force (they’re not just real *American* heroes anymore) through new members Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans).  They team up with Scarlett (Rachel Nichols), Heavy Duty (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Breaker (Said Taghmaoui), and Snake Eyes (Ray Park) under the command of General Hawk (Dennis Quaid) to try and thwart Destro, et al’s evil plans.  I’m not going to get into anymore specific details than that; I don’t want to spoil this movie for anyone.  I will tell you that the plot is big (it’s as convoluted as Transformers 2, if not more so), dumb (there are several moments where logic goes out the window and you just have to go with it), and (as I already mentioned) the fate of the world hangs in the balance, i.e. it’s exactly what you should expect for a summer action movie.

But really, this movie works in pretty much all the ways a summer action movie is supposed to work…(GO READ THE REST HERE)

A commenter on Ace clarifies the prohibition of private policies in the House bill:

128 Ace,

The deal with the grandfathering is that, yes you can keep your old plan but any new private policies written after this crap sandwich kicks in will basically have to mimic the public option. They’re putting in all sorts of new regulations that are the framework of the public option, and the regulations will apply to all private plans going forward. Only difference is that the public plan administrators have the benefit of being able to dictate how much they will pay to the doctors and hospitals and will avoid taxes at all levels (cause we all know the government won’t tax itself), whereas the private insurance companies do not have the luxury of doing either.

So, basically, if you lose your old private plan you can choose between the crappy government plan that you’re being taxed out the wazoo for, or you can pay out of your pocket for a “private” plan that’s exactly like the crappy government one (that you’ve already payed into). That is, if you even qualify for the government plan. Last I saw the cut-off for singles was $40K per year income and families was somewhere around $75K. So these “privileged” folks will be stuck not only paying for the public plan via their tax dollars, but also forced to buy private insurance on top of it or pay a fine for not having insurance because they don’t qualify for the public plan.

Nice, huh.

Update 2: Ed AP at HA has a new thread up covering the CBO pushback…

Update – Max Baucus (D-MT) head of the Sen Finance Cmte says he will have a deal to get the bill out of Cmte today, this despite the head of the CBO saying the proposed plan will NOT reduce health care spending by the government and will in fact INCREASE the spending.

Market Mover Thursday: JPMC knocks the cover off the ball…Foreclosures rise 15%…

jamieboxing1

JPMC knocked the cover off the ball with their earnings..MiM does not trust any bank earnings as a long term indicator for investment until the underlying toxic crap is off the books, it is not being written down thanks FASB, and not sold, thanks PPIP failure! It is out there sitting..not until unemployment turns around and Team TOTUS stops killing the economy will we be safe there as far as I am concerned..

Team TOTUS is to announce more housing plans today, we shall see how that goes..

But of all the banks Jamie Dimon is the best CEO on the globe IMHO, seriously…if banks are your bag, Jamie is your guy…

CNBC:

…Though the second-largest U.S. bank is widely considered among the healthiest of the nation’s major lenders, the amount set aside for bad loans in the quarter more than doubled from a year earlier, to $9.7 billion.

It said a surge in credit card and loan losses was likely to worsen.

Second-quarter results benefited from improving credit markets as well as federal regulators’ efforts to stimulate the economy by keeping borrowing costs low, bolstering mortgage and other lending activity.

Chief Executive Jamie Dimon’s bank skirted the worst of the credit crisis by largely avoiding losses and writedowns on complex debt and mortgages that hurt many rivals.

Among the six largest U.S. banks, JPMorgan is the only one not to lose money in any quarter since the recession began in 2007….

Jamie agrees with MiM!!!

…Dimon expressed opposition to an Obama administration plan to create a consumer finance protection agency, echoing other banks.

“The more agencies, the more politics and bureaucracy,” he said…

Weekly jobless claims are all whacked due to seasonal auto adjustments and bankruptcy filings:

The number of U.S. workers filing new claims for jobless benefits fell sharply last week to the lowest level since January, the government said on Thursday, but the data was distorted by an unusual pattern of automotive industry layoffs that amplified the drop

Initial claims for state unemployment insurance fell 47,000 to a lower-than-expected seasonally adjusted 522,000 in the week ended July 11, the Labor Department said. Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast claims to be unchanged at 565,000 last week.

A Labor Department official said that far fewer layoffs than anticipated based on past experience in the automotive sector and elsewhere in manufacturing accounted for both the large drop in seasonally adjusted claims last week and in the very steep decline in so-called continued claims.

This was the second week in a row that seasonal factors had affected the data and the official said this would continue for one or two more weeks before this influence faded. “The big drop is not necessarily a reflection of what is going on in the economy,” he said…

In other business headlines, Housing foreclosures rising:

The number of U.S. households on the verge of losing their homes soared by nearly 15 percent in the first half of the year as more people lost their jobs and were unable to pay their monthly mortgage bills. The mushrooming foreclosure crisis affected more than 1.5 million homes in the first six months of the year, according to a report released Thursday by foreclosure listing service RealtyTrac.

Hank Paulson on the Hill…

Reminder, here is where we were almost a year ago now, the world was ending and Hank was in a sea of flotsam and jetsom trying to keep us afloat..do I like what he did, hell no, am I glad TOTUS and Timmeh werent alone at the reins then? Hell yes!

Update: Video as it is available…

Watching them grill Hank on the Hill

Live feed here

IMO this is bad, very very bad..

This is what they would do with a CIA investigation of ‘Torture’…go back and question shxt they knew about and never opened their mouths about before to look good….

They are going back and questioning every aspect of decisions they KNEW at the time were being madem, that they rolled over for..

After 9/11, after the collapse of Lehman, things were not ‘normal’

Never thought I could feel bad for Hank but I do..

This is a witch hunt and a kangaroo court and a clusterfark all rolled into one…

These people have NO CLUE about the financial system, and the things they are allowing Team TOTUS to do RIGHT NOW IMO far outweigh what Hank did with TARP and BofA and Merrill…

Shit Chrysler Senior Debtholders were threatened a few months ago, none of these Congress critters made a peep..

Pelosi and Paulson and Reid, Oh My!

These are the same tools who LOVED them some Hank in October of 2008…

Hank does not look well….

The Critters are frankly really interrogating him at this point…cutting him off…beating him up and bullying him in fact with emails he has never seen…this is a guy they schmoozed like crazy, a guy who like it or not saved the system form collapsing, I do not agree with everything they did and didnt want TARP but we HAVE A FINANCIAL SYSTEM TODAY b/c Hank did something, unlike the Congress who was clueless and led by Nancy who was busy interfering with national elections and not minding the store….

Dennis Kucinich has bene on a MISSION to get Ken Lewis fired and BofA shareholders a nifty lawsuit, he is on CNBC now attacking Paulson….
