Yankees win 4-3!! ALCS Game 2 NYY v Anaheim Angels…

Back to Newsday Blog I was too excited to type:

THIRTEENTH INNING: YANKEES WIN, 4-3.

Bottom: To steal a phrase from the late great Bob Murphy, the Yankees “win the damn thing.”

Of course it wasn’t your typical walkoff play, because this game was completely atypical in every which way.

With runners on first and second and one out, Melky Cabrera hit a grounder to the left of second baseman Maicer Izturis. The Angels second baseman fielded it cleanly, yet instead of simply getting the sure out at first base he spun and threw to second.

Of course the throw was wild and Jerry Hairston – who led off the inning with a single – scored easily.

Hairston was awarded the pie in the face from Burnett after the game, and it was a neat pie. Hairston saw Burnett coming, and Burnett stopped right when he got to Hairston. For a second there was nothing, but just when Hairston’s defenses were down Burnett pied him in the face.

So the Yankees fly to Anaheim tonight two wins away from their first World Series berth since 2003.

EIGHTH INNING: Yankees 2, Angels 2.

Bottom: Reliever Matt Jepsen, in for Joe Saunders, sets down the Yankees in order. The Yankees have had only one man in scoring position since Derek Jeter’s one-out homer in the third inning.

Top: Girardi really does like to use up his bullpen rather quickly. One of these days it’s going to come back to hurt him. Will it be today?

Phil Hughes started the eighth, so Joba only went 1/3. Didn’t he look good enough against Vladdy in the seventh to send him back out there?

Oh well. Hughes gave up a one-out single to Juan Rivera, then got a sure out – and a chance at an inning-ending double play – when Maicer Izturis grounded to Jeter. But in a shocker, Jeter booted it and everyone was safe.

Hughes recovered to strike out pinch hitter Gary Matthews Jr., but that was it for him. In came Mariano Rivera – in yet another pitching change – and he got Erick Aybar to ground weakly to second base.

Don’t you get the feeling this game will eventually be in the hands of Alfredo Aceves and Dave Robertson?

FIFTH INNING: Yankees 2, Angels 2.

Top: Burnett had one of those mid-game episodes where he loses his control, and the Angels took advantage, scoring two runs to tie the score.

Erick Aybar’s one-out single up the middle scored Maicer Izturis, who led off the inning with a ground-rule double into the rightfield seats.

Then the Angels loaded the bases with two outs thanks to Chone Figgins (still hitless in postseason) getting hit by a pitch and Torii Hunter walking. Burnett, ahead of Vladimir Guerrero 1-and-2, threw a ball in the dirt attempting to get the free-swinging Angels DH to take a hack.

But Guerrero laid off the pitch, and it bounced several feet in front of Molina and away from him. Aybar scored easily from third base. And just like that it’s all tied up and we have a new game here. At least there’s no rain… yet.

Bottom of 5th,ow 2-2

Top 5th 2-1 Yanks, Angels have a man on 1st, 1 out-whoa stolen base to second

Bottom Third- NYY 2-0 Damon had his third hit in two nights and is on 1st, 1 out

Jeter 1 out homer!!

Bottom 2nd SWISHER SCORES!! 1-0 NYY, Cano tripled sent Swisher running for home

Bottom of 1st NYY at bat 0-0
