Update: One Night Only! Dorgan & McCain LIVE from the Senate floor team up in support of the Drug Reimportation Amendment….

Update: Shows Added, lol! Even AP notes OBAMA is blocking this billions in savings for American consumers. Debate continues today:

A bipartisan group of lawmakers hopes to finally win a long struggle to ease curbs against importing low-cost prescription drugs but will have to overcome the Obama administration and the pharmaceutical industry to do so. The Senate was resuming debate Thursday on President Barack Obama’s drive to reshape the country’s care system. The most crucial work was being done behind closed doors, where Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and his lieutenants were hunting support for a tentative deal among moderate and liberal Democrats to expand the government’s role in providing care.

As predicted Team Obama has SOLD US DOWN THE RIVER for Pharma and Billy frakkin Tauzin. The FDA released a letter OPPOSING the Amendment allowing the reimportation of prescription drugs for American consumers. Obama is AGAIN betraying a promise he made throughout the campaign. This is one of the single biggest cost saving expenses for Americans in their healthcare costs. The FDA has the AUDACITY to claim drugs coming from CANADA are not SAFE!! HA!! Dorgan and MAC teamed up in a great vaudeville style debate today, punching holes in the ridiculous FDA statement..

…Allowing importation of prescription drugs from a select few countries such as Canada, Ireland, and parts of Europe could lower prices in this country, and Dorgan has an amendment to the health-care bill that would legalize the practice.

Tuesday, the FDA blew a hole in his amendment. In a letter, FDA Commissioner Peggy Hamburg said importing drugs would be unsafe, too complex and too expensive. The drug industry has also opposed the practice, pointing out that Europe, which allows some importation, has problems with counterfeit drugs.

On the floor of the Senate today, McCain played the set-up man, lobbing rhetorical softballs for Dorgan. Here’s a much-condensed version of some of the highlights. Watch the whole thing yourself, starting around minute 270 in this C-Span video

McCain: Isn’t it true that a letter was written to one of our colleagues from the administrator of the FDA?

Dorgan: The Senator from Arizona is correct. They say “We don’t have the resources.” This amendment provides the resources for them. The people that are selling [imported drugs] will pay a fee.

McCain: It requires no additional funding from the taxpayer?

Dorgan: No additional funding from the taxpayer at all!

McCain: Could we say it would not propose any hazard to anyone’s health?

Dorgan: The countries that are involved in this amendment — and they are limited — are countries that have an identical chain of custody to our country.

On a roll now, Dorgan holds up two pill bottles and continues:

Both of these bottles contained Lipitor — most of my colleagues know what Lipitor is. And this was made by an American company in Ireland and shipped all over the world. This little bottle was shipped to the United States. This little bottle was shipped to Canada. What’s the difference? The price. The American consumer is told, guess what you get to do? You get to pay almost triple.

McCain: On behalf of the citizens of my state, I just want to say, thank you for your advocacy.

Shoutout to Congress: Fool on the Hill

Update: Ezra Klein looks at the same CBO report on a proposed Medicare expansion last year and sees a much different outlook. Will the real CBO impact analysis of the proposed expansion of Medicare (in combination with the proposed cuts to Medicare) please stand up?

We need a clear CBO reading on the breakthrough, will it help or hurt Medicare and how limited are the eligibility requirements for enrollment?

..The Congressional Budget Office has scored Medicare buy-in before — and they found it brightens the program’s financial prospects by bringing healthier people into the pool and reducing expected spending for these people when they turn 65….

Vodpod videos no longer available.

I dunno what they are doing anymore!

They are proposing a Medicare expansion to those 55 and up, which would be great… except Medicare is going bankrupt, CBO has been saying we cannot afford to expand it time immemorial(as recently as LAST YEAR!) AND this bill calls for at LEAST 500 billion or so in Medicare cuts over the next few years.

How can we ADD people to that, cut money and keep good care? Same old same old with this entire argument. It does not make sense on its face. My big fear is they will somehow add MEANS TESTING to Medicare via this plan thus setting up the CUTS ahead.

Wait til they get to the deficit reduction via Social Security ‘reform’ aka Gen X getting frakked.

Let’s all sing with the Beatles now. Maybe if WE were all lighthearted like the Fool on the Hill we wouldn’t sweat this stuff so much?

CBS cancels ‘As the World Turns’

Oh how sad! Another one down, (‘Guiding Light’ cancelled also)

James Hibberd has it:

Long-running CBS daytime serial “As the World Turns,” which premiered on April 2, 1956, has amassed 58 Daytime Emmys and launched the careers of such actors as Julianne Moore and Dana Delany, will conclude its more than five-decade run in September.

It has become the latest daytime soap to get the ax as daytime viewership is dwindling, forcing the networks to look for cheaper alternatives.

Top-rated from 1959-71, “As the World Turns” switched to color in 1967 and expanded to one hour in 1975. It is the longest-running daytime drama airing on TV following the cancellation of CBS’ “Guiding Light.”

“We are disappointed and saddened by the news that the show is not being renewed,” executive producer Chris Goutman said. “It will certainly be a loss for all of us, and for the show’s loyal audience.”

The show’s producer, Procter & Gable’s TeleNext Media, vowed to search for a new home for the show, but the odds of “As the World Turns” continuing are slim…

Academy Award nominated actress Julianne Moore appears in this clip from As The World Turns. Moore played the dual roles of Frannie Hughes and Sabrina Hughes on the drama, for which she won a Daytime Emmy Award in 1988; she played the roles from 1985 to 1988.

Queens born actor, Steven Weber, appeared on As The World Turns from 1985 to 1986. His best-known role was as Brian Hackett, a skirt-chasing airplane pilot on the NBC sitcom Wings.

Academy Award winning actress Marisa Tomei appears at the close of the clip. She appeared on As The World Turns from 1983 to 1987.
