…in America’s Saturday match against Ghana, an even score after 120 minutes of soccer will very likely favor the U.S. team. That’s because in the knockout phase of the World Cup, there are no draws. Any teams that end up tied in regulation will settle things on penalty kicks, wherein five players for each team get a free kick from 12 yards into a net protected only by the opposing goalkeeper.America has no shortage of confidence in its goalkeeper, 31-year-old Tim Howard, a New Jersey native now worshiped by fans of Everton, a professional English club. Retired U.S. national team member Paul Caligiuri says there are three reasons America should welcome a tie game: “No. 1, we have Tim Howard. No. 2, we have Tim Howard. No. 3, we have Tim Howard.”

And here’s reason No. 4: U.S. midfielder Landon Donovan is a perfect 9-for-9 on penalty kicks for the national team. In his professional career, moreover, he’s 21 for 24, well ahead of the world-wide average….
