You only think you’re free! The Prisoner remake starring Jim Caviezel and Ian McKellan premieres with Part 1 tonight on AMC 8/7 C. Official website here

In November, AMC will present The Prisoner miniseries, a reinterpretation of the British 1960s cult hit series that starred and was co-created by Patrick McGoohan.

The Premise : A man, known as Six, finds himself inexplicably trapped in The Village with no memory of how he arrived. As he explores his environment, he discovers that his fellow inhabitants are identified by number instead of name, have no memory of any prior existence, and are under constant surveillance. Not knowing whom to trust, Six is driven by the need to discover the truth behind The Village, the reason for his being there, and most importantly — how he can escape.

Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ , The Thin Red Line) will play the role of Six; and two-time Oscar nominee Ian McKellen (Lord of the Rings, The Da Vinci Code) will co-star as Two.

The Prisoner miniseries is a co-production of AMC and ITV Productions; the deal was brokered by Granada International, which holds international distribution rights. Bill Gallagher (Conviction, Clocking Off, Lark Rise To Candleford) serves as writer and executive producer, along with Michele Buck, Damien Timmer, Rebecca Keane, and AMC’s Charlie Collier, Christina Wayne and Vlad Wolynetz. It is produced by Trevor Hopkins (Dracula, Poirot).

Is Torchwood back?!! Season 4?!

Alert the fans!

Our previous posts on Torchwood here. h/t SciFiWire.

Torchwood might not have concluded its run at the end of the thrilling miniseries Children of Earth after all – Ianto’s tragic death not withstanding. The new year could bring some “very good news” for fans of the sexy sci-fi series, creator Russell T. Davies tells TV Guide Magazine.

“The recession has hit British television, but fingers crossed, it will be a go. We expect things to start to move in January. We’ve got great ideas for the show. I think there’s a further lease on life for many years to come, but certainly for a [fourth season],” Davies says...

Above the post update on premiere ratings from SciFiWire:

V became the highest rated sci-fi premiere of the new fall TV season after 13.9 million people watched the pilot episode last night, according to preliminary ratings. That number is still subject to some change, but it looks likely that this will be the biggest show to debut at 8 p.m. since another ABC sci-fi series, Lost….

‘V’ : NYC don’t be worried by the giant red V appearing in the sky Friday…

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a giant frakkin ‘V’! It is a promo for the new ABC series!! And ABC was nice enough to notify New Yorkers (unlike Nobel prize winning TOTUS and the AirForceOne flyby incident).

To promote its new alien-invasion series, ABC is recreating the shock of something inexplicable appearing in the skies over New York.

Starting Friday, the giant red letter V — written by skywriting planes — will begin to appear over New York landmarks like the Statute of Liberty, the network says, to promote “V,” a remake of the 1980s miniseries, that begins next month.

…ABC won’t specify which landmarks will be getting the giant V treatment, but it will go on for several days, it says. New Yorkers can expect to see the sky graffiti overhead early Sunday and again on Halloween.

Using skywriting is a natural fit for the series, which is about spaceships simultaneously appearing over 29 US cities, marking the world’s first encounter with an alien race. The V stands for the series’ alien Visitors, who are promoting a message of peace through sharing advanced technology.

But some people begin to suspect that the Vs are hiding a malevolent agenda including an FBI agent (played by Elizabeth Mitchell from “Lost“) and a news anchor (Scott Wolf, “The Nine“).

Oh noes!! They are only going to air 4 episodes before going on hiatus?? Are they TRYING to kill the show? Sigh.

..Four episodes of “V” will air this year before it goes on hiatus, returning early next year…

‘V’ production takes 2 week ‘creative hiatus’…

Oh I hope all is well in V land. IIRC they were doing re editing and re shoots of the pilot after it was screened at SDCC 09, but now they are on a two week hiatus so they seem to think they have an issue someplace….our previous posts on V here and here

…Joseph Adalian at The Wrap reports:

ABC’s buzz-heavy new fall drama “V” is taking a two-week creative hiatus.

Warner Bros. TV has decided to temporarily shut down production on the alien invasion series, with filming scheduled to halt next Wednesday, a studio rep confirmed exclusively to TheWrap. Because “V” doesn’t premiere until Nov. 3, the move won’t impact scheduling of the series or ABC’s ability to air the six episodes it’s planning for the fourth quarter.

The studio wouldn’t discuss the specific reasons behind the move, saying only that the shutdown was designed to boost “V” in the long-term.

WBTV wants to “take advantage of our November premiere to maximize creative opportunities and deliver the audience the best show possible,” a Warners spokesperson said.

People familiar with the decision indicated the hiatus was put in place so that writers would have time to beef up future scripts and bring them in line with the quality of the pilot, which has been getting good buzz from bloggers and critics since a successful screening at Comic-Con last month.

Dominick Dunne passes away…

God Bless Him, I hope his daughter Dominique was waiting for him at the pearly gates.

I first came across Dominick Dunne’s work when my mother loaned me The Two Mrs. Grenvilles. My mom loves to follow Hollywood Babylonesque chatter.  I began reading him again when his daughter was murdered while working on “V” the original miniseries. And of course she was the oldest daughter in ‘Poltergeist’, my fave movie when I was 11. I followed the trial and followed Dominick’s coverage of crime in high society afterward.

The Irish in me has to note his book a Season in Purgatory, was widely held as a Kennedy expose, and which to be truthful really shook me up and made me look into the Martha Moxley case also. And of course he covered every minute of the William Kennedy Smith rape trial as well.

A Season in Purgatory -YA-The Bradleys are a large, rich, powerful, Irish-Catholic family, headed by a ruthless patriarch who is bent on having his favorite son, Constant, become president. Mrs. Bradley is a religious, designer-clad mother who shuts her eyes to her husband’s numerous affairs. Harrison Burns is Constant’s poor but bright friend. They attend the same exclusive prep school. One night, Constant beats a young girl to death, and Harrison helps him cover it up. Twenty-two years later, he can’t bear the guilt of his complicity in the crime and decides to confess. Can he bring the Bradley dynasty down with him? Dunne, who has previously paralleled real life in The Two Mrs. Grenvilles (Crown, 1985), has written a real page-turner that looks into the lives of a wealthy, morally corrupt American family.
