Update: Gibbs does not deny: Rudy! ‘The David Paterson Problem’: Team TOTUS asks Paterson to withdraw from NY Gov race…
Update 4: Gibbs does not deny:
- He didn’t dispute reports that the White House has asked New York Gov. David Paterson to drop his reelection campaign. “Well, look, I think everybody understands the tough job that every elected official has right now in addressing many of the problems that we have,” Gibbs said. “I think people are aware of the tough situation that the governor of New York is in. I wouldn’t add a lot to what you’ve read except this is a decision that he’s going to make.”
Gibbs dismissed a suggestion that Obama risked blowback by meddling in local affairs, saying other presidents had done the same and backlash was simply one of the “hazards of the job.”
Update 3: 9/21: NYPost comments that the NY State Legislature will now be brought to a standstill as pols refuse to take painful votes to get the budget in line for Paterson since he is a ‘dead man walking’. Thanks TOTUS for making sure NY gets absolutely nothing done until next year.
NYPost also asks is TOTUS pushing Paterson out to try and stop a Rudy entry and Rudy win, thereby setting Rudy up for a ’12 challenge to TOTUS? You betcha! My mom would vote for Rudy in a hot second!
(…)But most importantly, Obama realizes that the only thing that could stand between his own re-election in 2012 and a direct challenge from former mayor and potential Republican gubernatorial and presidential contender Rudy Giuliani – the man who defeated New York City’s first black mayor — is Attorney General Cuomo, the state’s most popular politician and one who unfailingly beats Giuliani in the polls.
The unelected Paterson, who polls show is easy prey to a Giuliani candidacy, is, of course, a very different story….
Update 2: Breaking on WSJ Chyron Lazio to enter NY Gov race. Now it would be doubly fun were we to get HRC running, oh if only. But whomever takes this job has a hexx of a mess waiting for them and a recalcitrant state legislature full of nincompoops IMO…
Update: WH calls FOX to whine and say TOTUS didn’t make the call on Paterson himself, it was just some high level WH person, you know how that is, lol. More of the now infamous WH crybabies Chris Wallace laughed about Friday..how WEAK!
Pfft! and BWAAAHAAAAHAA!!Sounds like Paterson got the same lesson all the peeps who wanted to run against Gillibrand got, there is no such thing as having a friend in high places when it is TOTUS. Anyone can go unda da bus at any time.
National Democratic Party leaders have asked Gov. David Paterson to consider withdrawing from the 2010 governor’s race.(…) The sources said it was unclear what Gov. Paterson would do in response.
The New York Times, which originally reported the request on its Web site, said that it was President Barack Obama who asked Gov. Paterson to withdraw.
Party leaders in Washington have become concerned about Gov. Paterson’s political weakness, believing the governor’s office is too important to risk losing, one of the state Democratic advisers told the AP on Saturday.
And it sounds like they lowered the boom now so TOTUS didn’t have to do it in person next week. Bock Bock Barack!
A message about the race was delivered from top national Democrats at a dinner Friday night with Gov. Paterson…The Democratic leaders spoke of a concern referred to as the “David Paterson problem,” the adviser said.
The request has been in the works for a couple weeks, and the intention was to wait until after the state’s primary to deliver it, the other adviser said.…Mr. Obama is scheduled to be in upstate New York that day, when he is expected to deliver a vision of economic revival to students at the Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.
That’s our TOTUS, delivering VISIONS of economic revival instead of, you know, actual ECONOMIC REVIVAL! A regular Sugar Plum Fairy is TOTUS.
I think they are clearly RACIST! Sorry had to say it, recall Paterson claimed racism was behind his awful poll numbers
…Gov. David A. Paterson said on Friday that the chorus of people who believe he should not run for election next year want to keep him out of the race because he is black.
“We’re not in the post-racial period,” said Mr. Paterson..
In an interview with NY1, Rep. Charles Rangel warns state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo not to challenge Gov. David Paterson in a Democratic primary next year, saying it could create “racial polarization” in the state and be “devastating” to New York Democrats.
“You cannot support the governor, prepare for re-election, and at the same time say that you’re keeping your options open for a primary,” Rangel said of Cuomo.
“I think that there might be an inclination for racial polarization in a primary in the state of New York,” Rangel told political reporter Michael Scotto. “And since we have most African-Americans registered as Democrats, and since you would be making an appeal for Democrats, it would be devastating in my opinion.”
What a bunch of loons we have running things seriously. It seems Team TOTUS spends a LOT of time worrying about elections and not a lot of time creating JOBS for Americans.

And the insanity continues, I think Bloomberg loses Mayoral control of the NYC schools effective today….:
Governor Paterson tells the media he recognizes that Senator Frank Padavan was not in the chamber and did not provide a quorum for Senate Democrats on June 30, 2009.
Video Update: Bloomberg Presser…Brutal Budget Reprise: NYC faces service cuts, increased fees/taxes…
Update: 12:00pm EST: Bloomberg to speak on the budget cuts LIVE shortly FOX will cover it
Oh this is going to be painful, just as the Governors had to balance their budgets, now all the cities are taking the hit…..my sympathy to my family and friends still in the Big Apple..here in Phoenix we are in our own kind of economic hell with housing…it’s rough all over…
NYC WCBSTV.com reports:
Mayor Michael Bloomberg is set to tell New Yorkers on Friday that the budget for the next year will be excruciatingly painful. Jobs will be axed, programs slashed and lots of things will cost more.
a shout-out to NYC…Dio courtesy of Sakke72
More from the WCBSTV piece:
Shrinking tax revenues have turned the $1.3 billion November budget hole into a now-$4 billion chasm:
* $1 billion in program cuts, affecting virtually every city agency.
* New taxes and fees, including more taxes on clothing, a fee for plastic shopping bags in grocery stores and higher fees for lots of other city services.
* The capital budget will be slashed.
* City employees will be asked to pay part of their healthcare costs.
* There will be a reduction of 23,000 jobs through layoffs and attrition. That’s more than 7 percent of the city’s employees.
Sources say expect fewer cops, firefighters and sanitation workers.
Schools Chancellor Joel Klein has already said he could be forced to eliminate 15,000 education jobs, one third by attrition. The federal stimulus package could save some of the teaching jobs.
This comes after NYS was forced to take similar action, as covered by MiM here. Bloomberg is expected to announce the plans Friday.
Here they come! It’s her it’s her!! WOOHOO!!!!!!!!
Al D’Amato is on the stage I am going to take a wild leap and hit publish now it must be Kirsten!!!…
Governor Paterson just made the announcement!!
covered by FOX LIVE here, the noon presser…here is a lady we need for this seat!!!! Have we mentioned this is the candidate Hillary supported for the job? And you KNOW how we at MiM love moderates, a Blue Dawg Dem is Gillibrand… :0) And we think it is just AWESOME that Rep. Gillibrand has a brand new baby, LOVE it when a mom gets promoted. Children are NOT a bar to a successful career and Governor Paterson knows it! Rep. Gillibrand is the only NY Dem who voted against the 700b TARP boondoggle FYI, not easily pressured is Gillbrand. :0)
Please thank Governor Paterson if you are in NYS:
David A. Paterson
Albany, NY 12224
Update: Politico picked it up and notes the voting record issue is on guns. Gillibrand has a top rating with the NRA and has written amicus briefs in support of gun rights per the piece. Remember, upstate NY is quite red, and this position while right of many DEM comfort zones, makes her an attractive 2010 campaign prospect for Paterson…:
Still, Gillibrand’s pro-gun positions have aroused opposition in a state where most Democrats, and many Republicans, favor stringent gun control measures. She earned the NRA’s top rating last year and backed a repeal of Washington D.C.’s hand gun ban—even submitting an amicus brief to the Supreme Court in support of pro-gun groups.
“She would not be my choice and I talked to the governor about it two weeks ago,” McCarthy told Politico last night. “This morning I basically started getting calls saying he was going to choose her and I had to speak out, even at the risk of alienating the governor. I do not believe New York should have a senator who has these positions… I just came through the 15th anniversary of when my husband was killed and I my son was maimed from the shooting.”
Several anti-gun groups, including New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, spent Thursday calling Paterson’s office to urge him to pick someone else.
This is UNCONFIRMED BREAKING news…..
all ROY no confirmation yet, but if accurate, Congratulations Rep. Gillibrand!!
As it just broke by WPIX:
PIX NEWS is being told that Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand is the reported choice of Governor David Paterson to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton.
Two members of that delegation, agreeing to speak without attribution, told me that the Governor has telephoned New York’s Democratic members of Congress for their views after Caroline Kennedy withdrew herself from consideration. One of the contenders, longterm Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney canceled a scheduled appearance on “PIX News Closeup” tomorrow because of a “conflict,” which she did not disclose. She too will be in Albany. According to the sources, Gillibrand, now in her second congressional term, was favored by Secretary of State Clinton herself. Paterson has been under pressure to select a woman.
With most Democratic leaders in Albany coming from the New York City area, one source said this would be an important move for the Governor to have a Senator from upstate. Sources say Gillibrand would be an asset to Paterson in any bid for election in 2010.
While some insist Gillibrand is the Governor’s choice, another New York Congressman cautioned tonight that “It’s not a done deal.” He claims there is some political in-fighting and ongoing conversations with the Governor. There appears to be some challenge to Gillibrand’s voting record. She’s now serving her second term. Reached for comment, the Dean of New York’s Congressional delegation, Charlie Rangel, would say nothing more than that he’s been invited to join the governor for an announcement tomorrow morning.
More on Rep. Gillebrand from her House website:
In her first term in office, Congresswoman Gillibrand has established herself as an independent leader in Congress. She was the lead sponsor of legislation that would implement the bipartisan 9/11 Commission Recommendations, which will help protect our borders and keep America safe. She has been an advocate for decreased federal spending, and introduced legislation that would require the federal government – just as all New York families do – to balance their budget every year. Finally, she has made tax cuts for Upstate and North Country families, one of her highest priorities. She has authored legislation that would double the tax credit for child care expenses and make up to $10,000 in college tuition tax deductible.
Congresswoman Gillibrand has taken unprecedented steps to make her office accountable and transparent to her constituents. She was the first Member of Congress to publish their public schedule online at the end of each day, and as a strong proponent of earmark reform, she voluntarily released every earmark that she requested that would invest in Upstate and North Country priorities.
Congresswoman Gillibrand serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the Agriculture Committee . On the Armed Services Committee, Representative Gillibrand serves on the Terrorism, Unconventional Threats and Capabilities subcommittee and the Seapower subcommittee. On the Agriculture Committee Representative Gillibrand serves on the Livestock, Dairy and Poultry subcommittee, Conservation Credit Energy and Research subcommittee and the Horticulture and Organic Agriculture subcommittee.
In addition to her committee assignments, Congresswoman Gillibrand founded the Congressional High Tech Caucus with Representative Michael McCaul (R-TX) with the goal of ensuring that the United States remains at the forefront of emerging technologies and high tech industries.
During the administration of President Clinton, Gillibrand served as Special Counsel to the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Andrew Cuomo. At HUD she played a key role in furthering HUD’s Labor Initiative and New Markets initiative, working to strengthen enforcement of the Davis-Bacon Act and drafting new markets legislation for public and private investment in building infrastructure to revitalize lower income areas across the nation. Following federal service, Congresswoman Gillibrand entered the private sector, joining one of the Country’s premier law firms. As a partner in the firm, she worked on a wide range of legal and policy related issues, requiring the knowledge and ability to negotiate on the highest levels, skills which serve her constituents well as a Member of Congress.
Kirsten Gillibrand is a firm believer that those in a position to do so have an obligation to “give back” by serving their community. In addition to her responsibilities at the law firm, she maintained an extensive pro-bono practice for clients whose voices are seldom heard and needs seldom addressed. Her service on behalf of abused women and their children, and tenants seeking safe affordable housing without lead paint hazards has been tireless. At the heart of Representative Gillibrand’s core values is the inspiration of her grandmother, Dorothea (Polly) Noonan, who was a founder of the area’s first Women’s Democratic Club and was a pioneer for women’s rights in the region.
Carolyn Maloney was our first choice at MiM, but Rep. Gillibrand is also very well qualified and has been an elected public servant to the people of NY. She knows her constituents upstate and their needs and has wider, national experience as counsel to…. wait for it…Andrew Cuomo! small small world is politics….congratulations NY!!
IN SUPPORT OF CAROLYN MALONEY FOR HRC SEAT: AP tries to make ‘you know’ a fait accompli…call Paterson ask for Maloney!
SUPPORT CAROLYN MALONEY!!!
the AP, home of Nedra ‘Crotchshot’ Pickler and other assorted PEBO water carriers, is trying to make Caroline the empty Chanel suit Kennedy’s appointment a fait accompli, as they did for PEBO..
whatever you think about the PEBO election, Caroline Kennedy is unqualified and frankly unfit for this important office…
One more time, please look at Carolyn Maloney, the Congresswoman from NY’s resume and please call or email Paterson if you are in NY and ask for Maloney and NOT the empty suit…Carolyn Maloney has been in Congress since 1993, let the Princess take that seat if she thinks she can hold it…..
or call- David A. Paterson
Albany, NY 12224
WE WANT THE PITCHER NOT A BELLY ITCHER!!
WE WANT THE CATCHER NOT A BACK SCRATCHER!!
WE WANT CAROLYN MALONEY!!
Caroline Kennedy seems to think she is entitled to her late Uncle’s (God Bless Bobby and John) NY Senate seat. What with her Op-Ed that helped launch a thousand rallies for PEBO and her turning over the keys to the kingdom and convincing Uncle Teddy to crown PEBO before the adoring masses in the run up to the Democratic Primaries, she apparently feels she now has ‘political experience’…
After all, she DID run the PEBO VEEP search committee which gave us the ground breaking pick of…….Joe Biden…
Uhm, yeah., Maybe not Caroline.
But wait! Fans tell us it would be so sweet, and she wrote books on Consitutional Law! Well so did Jeffrey Toobin of CNN and no one suggests HE would be qualified to hold the NYS Senate seat…
It is really all about the name, bottom line, and the endorsement for PEBO..
We are in a recession unlike any seen since..well frankly in my lifetime..inflation is low now, but I have no doubt that 70s era Carteresque inflation is coming in two years…Wall St brokerages have ceased to exist as we knew them..the commercial paper market is in turmoil….jobs are leaving NY in an exodus and taxes are going up..services are being slashed….we need Superman orwoman, we don’t need a painfully shy socialite with ZERO PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE in getting legislation passed..or even KNOWING the state and its needs…
Living in Manhattan and attending charity balls and fundraisers does NOT, I repeat, does NOT give you experience in NYS politics ..
Although I’m sure they raise money for good things, like the wee furry wonders of the world, but we wouldn’t have wanted Leona Helmsley running NYS either and she gave to charity too, although her dog probably has enough dough to run a fabulous campaign for the seat in 2010, thus qualifying him under Democratic Party guidelines..
If being rich or famous and living in Manhattan was all it took, then Fran Drescher would get the seat (and Fran is, you know, more ‘in touch’ with the people). It may get you a seat at Bloomberg’s dinner table and a friend in the schools chancellor when you raise money at charity functions but it does NOT equip you to go toe to toe and FIGHT for the PEOPLE…(speaking of which we ALL know Bloomberg hates Hillary in large part because she FIGHTS him when she feels the people would be better served by not pursuing his agenda)..Hey think Bloomberg is looking for a rubber stamp, I do!
Gee think I have an opinion on this or what? HA!
I have been trying to let it go by without commenting but after the DISASTROUS appearances Caroline made in upstate NY yesterday, we need to talk…she confirmed what I had suspected, she has ZERO ZIP NADA ZILCH base of knowledge about the needs of NYS and the people who live and work there…
First of all, it is classless not to call Hillary. Secondly, to not call her and then steal her theme of a conversation and listening tour and ASSUME that you are as experienced or frankly as good as Hill was a grave error on her part (maybe Caroline has been watching too much NBC and bought her own propaganda).
Hillary is a wonky goddess, she LOVES to learn, she LOVES to listen, she ACTIVELY listens and communicates and she went on tour after having learned all she possibly could…..Caro? not so much….(and PS anyone who is comparing this selection to Hillary get off it, Hillary was E-L-E-C-T-E-D- get it?)
How did her stop in Syracuse go? Surely the Mayors are all lining up to endorse the Princess?
WCBSTV: Afterward, CBS 2 HD spoke with Mayor Driscoll by phone. He said that although Kennedy was gracious, he wasn’t willing to back her candidacy … right now.
“I think it’s premature for me to say that,” Driscoll said. “I think there’s a lot of great candidates out there.
“But at the end of the day I think it’s important to have someone who represents you, knows New York State and really has an intimate knowledge of the state and upstate.”
What a novel approach!! SOMEONE WHO REALLY HAS KNOWLEDGE OF THE STATE AND UPSTATE!
Well how did the press handle it? Is the PEBO press bubble in which Caro traveled still in effect? Uhmmm no.
The black SUV pulled up to Syracuse city hall Wednesday morning. It was stop one on Kennedy’s upstate tour.
…reporters who wanted her to do more talking and less listening. “But you’ve never held public office so what experience [do you have]?” one reporter asked. “You’re not going to answer questions at all?” one asked.
“Where you headed next?” another demanded.
“To the car.”( she replied)
Ohhhh snarky with the press, baaad idea Caro, you’re not in PEBO’s golden bubble anymore girlie, these are the rough and tumble snowbanks of upstate NY now….
Caroline said to the reporters, ask not what I can do for New York State, ask what New York State can do for me. Okay, so she didn’t say that, but if they make this appointment they may as well..(MiM).
Ich ben ien Syracusian! no she didnt say that either, but she should have, maybe she would get a laugh….
