Waxman prepares to roll big Pharma…

Ahh Billy, Billy. What were you thinking trusting any deal with this Administration? Tsk, tsk. Karmic backlash.

Ed has all the details at HotAir:

Barack Obama picked up considerable political support for his overhaul of the American health-care system by promising a limit on price concessions to the pharmaceutical manufacturers.  They signed onto ObamaCare after getting assurances that their givebacks would amount to no more than $80 billion over 10 years and that the federal government would not try to bargain for lower pricing using its advantage through Medicare.  Henry Waxman plans to renege on just about every aspect of that agreement:

As the health care debate focuses on whether cost cuts are looming in Medicare coverage, Representative Henry A. Waxman is on a crusade to save Medicare billions of dollars — in a way that he says would end up helping the elderly.

That is because the money would come from the drug industry, which is why Mr. Waxman may have a fight on his hands.

Drug makers contend they have already worked out a 10-year, $80 billion cost-savings deal with the White House and crucial Senate gatekeepers on the trillion-dollar health care overhaul. The industry says that trying to add Mr. Waxman’s provision could scuttle that agreement.

“You not only break the deal, but you break the bank for us,” said Billy Tauzin, chief executive of the drug industry’s trade group, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, known as PhRMA….

Cry me a river Billy you jaggoff. Pharma has the biggest profit margin of all the playas in this line of business and they were skating away, just like they did on Medicare PT D, and leaving Americans to bear the brunt of a POS reform package in some kind of frakkin protection racket they have going up in the Oval these days…Nice little pill business you have there, shame if anything were to happen to it…as we have said here numerous times, if he sold out Americans for 150m ad deal in exchange for ‘protection’ from the jackboots running the House right now he is a fool.

If you can’t beat ’em, open a Congressional investigation…

Congress has gone fishin’

Did Waxman not learn from the ridiculous Clinton impeachment moves of the 90s? The American people want the SPENDING TO STOP. We need jobs, We do NOT want MORE BS investigations of PRIVATE BUSINESS so Waxman can make another boogeyman to gin up more class warfare arguments. Ugh.

Politico:

House Democrats are probing the nation’s largest insurance companies for lavish spending, demanding reams of compensation data and schedules of retreats and conferences.

Letters sent to 52 insurance companies by Democratic leaders demand extensive documents for an examination of ‘extensive compensation and other business practices in the health insurance industry.” The letters set a deadline of Sept. 14 for the documents.

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, signed the three-page letter dated Monday.

An industry source replied when asked for comment: “This is nothing more than a taxpayer-funded fishing expedition designed to silence health plans….

Gee what else is happening in September? Hmmm THE FRAKKIN VOTE ON HEALTHCARE 2 WEEKS AFTER THE INFO IS DUE? The ONLY thing transparent about this Congress is the thug like way they roll….Ugh.

Video Update: GM CFO Ray Young says co won’t make June 1st $1Billion debt repayment…

Update 2: CNBC’s Phil LeBeau

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Update: Bloomberg:

General Motors Corp., trying to avoid a U.S.-backed bankruptcy on June 1, may close plants and scrap models as much as four years sooner than planned to lower its break-even point, people familiar with the effort said….

…The new plan may require GM to complete many of the reductions in models and dealers planned by 2014 as soon as next year, allowing earlier plant and job reductions, people briefed on the talks said. GM said March 31 that by 2014 it would trim dealers to 4,100 from 6,122, nameplates to 36 from 43, and U.S. assembly capacity to 2 million vehicles from 2.8 million.

The bond offer may include some framework of GM’s plan to cut $20.4 billion in obligations to a United Auto Workers union- run retiree-medical fund by more than half, two of the people said. The bond offer may disclose what portion, if any, of U.S. loans would be converted to equity, one person said.

Breaking from WSJ on CNBC Chyron…

This is in addition to GM CEO Fritz Henderson commenting bankruptcy more likely…

they are really putting the hammer down on the bondholders..were I they, I would NOT cut a deal, I would wait for my bankruptcy judge, but the pundits say a MI bankruptcy judge will be under HUGE political pressure to wipe the bondholders out anyway…

say hello to Nancy Pelosi and Henry Waxman’s Little Friend..a Flintstone mobile, perhaps all we will be allowed to purchase until they reinvent the wheel..

A vehicle that meets Waxman/Pelosi emission standards

A vehicle that meets Waxman/Pelosi emission standards

We will then get sued by people behind us as our feet produce a cloud of dust they can claim MIGHT somehow damage them as a pollutant…

Good Grief….

Dingell Out Waxman In

A reshuffling of the guard!!

CNBC John Harwood just reported the final vote leaves Waxman (bio at the link)  the new Chair of the powerful House Energy and Commerce Cmte

Rep. Henry Waxman unseated fellow veteran Democratic lawmaker John Dingell on Thursday to become chairman of the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee.

The 255-House Democratic conference voted 137 to 122 to accept the recommendation of its steering committee and agreed to replace Dingell, 82, a long-time friend of the U.S. auto industry, with Waxman, a 69-year-old Californian anxious to ease global warming, a top concern of U.S. President-elect Barack Obama.

-snip-

Waxman is considered more liberal than current Chairman John Dingell, D-Mich., on issues like climate change, energy and business regulation. He also is potentially more aggressive on healthcare.

It is a HUGE BLOW for Detroit and the Rustbelt per Harwood

There is no doubt that Dingell has done all he can (as a Rep from MI and supporter of the Big 3) to BLOCK any meaningful CAFE standard changes or progress toward more efficient vehicles..
