SOTU Response from Paul Ryan (R-WI) ~ Mama Said Wonk You Out

Update 2:

Update: Excerpts from Ryan’s SOTU response here:

SPENDING: “In one of our first acts in the new majority, House Republicans voted to cut Congress’s own budget. And just today, the House voted to restore the spending discipline that Washington sorely needs. The reason is simple. A few years ago, reducing spending was important. Today, it’s imperative. Here’s why. We face a crushing burden of debt. The debt will soon eclipse our entire economy, and grow to catastrophic levels in the years ahead. On this current path, when my three children – who are now 6, 7, and 8 years old – are raising their own children, the federal government will double in size, and so will the taxes they pay. No economy can sustain such high levels of debt and taxation. The next generation will inherit a stagnant economy and a diminished country. Frankly, it’s one of my greatest concerns as a parent – and I know many of you feel the same way.”

BUDGET: “Americans are skeptical of both political parties, and that skepticism is justified – especially when it comes to spending. So hold all of us accountable. In this very room, the House will produce, debate, and advance a budget. Last year – in an unprecedented failure– Congress chose not to pass, or even propose a budget. The spending spree continued unchecked. We owe you a better choice and a different vision. Our forthcoming budget is our obligation to you – to show you how we intend to do things differently, how we will cut spending to get the debt down, help create jobs and prosperity, and reform government programs.”

FISCAL CHALLENGE AHEAD: “Our nation is approaching a tipping point. We are at a moment, where if government’s growth is left unchecked and unchallenged, America’s best century will be considered our past century. This is a future in which we will transform our social safety net into a hammock, which lulls able-bodied people into lives of complacency and dependency. Depending on bureaucracy to foster innovation, competitiveness, and wise consumer choices has never worked – and it won’t work now. We need to chart a new course.”

And he NAILED the American  spirit here:

LIMITED GOVERNMENT: “We need to reclaim our American system of limited government, low taxes, reasonable regulations, and sound money, which has blessed us with unprecedented prosperity. And it has done more to help the poor than any other economic system ever designed. That’s the real secret to job creation – not borrowing and spending more money in Washington. Limited government and free enterprise have helped make America the greatest nation on earth.”

I want a wonkfest from Paul Ryan tonight. It is PAST time. Americans are ready. We see it globally. We see it in Fed money printing and out of control Democratic spending with NO MEANINGFUL POSITIVE RESULTS.

We are ready to hear the bad news, then the prescription for the fix, and we want NUMBERS AND WONKERY OF THE HIGHEST ORDER!

We already have PLENTY of wordfog, fury signifying nothing, from Mr Bombastic Fantastic Obama in the SOTU, I hope the GOP Leadership allows Rep. Ryan to be Ryan in all his wonky glory.

Show us the problem, show us your plan, by the numbers, then finish up with a reminder of who we are, Americans. How we have built this country and how the American people have never met an insurmountable obstacle and that includes this debt and deficit. We are in it to win it. With the balance come the jobs.

Beware of violent lyrics from LL here~Tipper would want that PMRC label large~

Golden Globe Nomination Roundup: ‘True Blood’ gets nods for Best Drama/Actress, ‘Mad Men’ vs ‘House’ for best actor/drama…

Not much Golden Globe excitement this year IMO.  True Blood got 2 nominations (Anna up against Kyra Sedgwick for The Closer, another great acrtess in a great role), and SciFiWire notes James Cameron is up against his ex, she for ‘The Hurt Locker’ him for the peaceful smurf movie it took a decade to make. ‘Glee’ got props (best actor/actress/musical-comedy).

Will Hugh Laurie beat Jon Hamm for Best Actor in tv drama? Hope so! (Do they give Emmys for one time directorial outings a la the upcoming Hugh Laurie directed episode of House and the Joss Whedon upcoming ‘Glee’ and past awesomeness with episodes of The Office? They should.)

Will we be forced to watch ’30 Rock’ acceptance speech clips all day again the day after the awards? Let’s hope not.

And Michael Emerson was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for LOST 🙂 It would be great if he wins, it will match his Emmy!

But in general, booooo-rrring! They need more SciFi/Fantasy/Horror series in the Golden Globes. Man oh man.

On Thursday, September 17th the cast of House took to the Red Carpet (that was blue) for the sixth season premiere of House MD at the Arclight theater in Hollywood.
Ford Fiesta Agents Bridget O’Neill and Meghan Mathes talk to the cast about the show, what we can expect for season six, and who in the cast is a “twitterhead”

On September 21, 2009, tune into FOX at 8.7c for the two hour premiere of House. It’s SO GOOD!

NYDailyNews gives the 2 hour season 6 premiere rave reviews. I am glad to hear it, b/c last season bored me to tears and I am a Hugh Laurie fan..

House” launches its sixth season Monday night with its title doctor character now a patient, having checked himself into Mayfield Psychiatric Hospital…it’s just House and the residents of Mayfield, notably Dr. Darryl Nolan (Andre Braugher), who will decide after treatment whether to recommend that House get his medical license back.

…Dr. Nolan is a worthy adversary, one of the first dueling partners who often seems able to match House in strategic planning.

Like House, he thinks three moves ahead, and when House deduces some potentially humiliating personal information designed to send the doctor slinking back to his office, Nolan shrugs and says he’s not the issue here….In any case, he finds plenty of new peeps to play off in his new place. Besides Dr. Nolan, his main sparring partner becomes his roommate, Alvie (Lin-Manuel Miranda).

..Other complications arise as well, and Laurie is superb in this episode, carrying scenes so strongly that for long stretches the viewer will forget the absence of his regular colleagues entirely.

SciFiWire: Bryan Singer (X Men) directing new BSG film imagining…

Not the BSG cast. Another new imagining of the original show, this time in feature film form. Seems no one can get financing to do anything original anymore.  I am always happy when SciFi/Fantasy films get into production. Bryan Singer is also a great producer, witness House, M.D. which I love, Interview with Singer on hiring Hugh Laurie for the role here

SciFiWire has the scoop, (go see their prior reports at their link)

Entertainment Weekly is confirming a story—first reported by HitFix‘s Drew McWeeny (and passed on by SCI FI Wire yesterday)—that Bryan Singer will produce and direct a new film version of Battlestar Galactica for Universal Pictures.

Here’s how the magazine somewhat condescendingly reports the news without giving credit where it’s due:

Universal Pictures has confirmed blog speculation that Bryan Singer, director of Valkyrie, will take on directing and producing duties for a BSG movie. Glen Larson, who created original series back in 1978, will produce as well. The film is not expected to be a continuation of current popular television show that’s running on the Syfy network but will be a complete re-imagining of the sci-fi lore that was invented by Larson back in the ’70s.

TOTUS poaches FOX TV for staff….

HOUSE SPOILER ALERT, if you didnlt watch last night go no further!

DAMMIT!! THIS is why Kutner killed himself last night in HOUSE!

Video courtesy of spoenk

Ben Smith:

[For House fans who missed last night’s episode: Spoiler alert!]

How about that.

Kal Penn, the actor who was a remarkably diligent, oddly well-informed campaigner for Obama, killed his character on “House” last night so the actor could take a White House job, reports.

I was incredibly honored a couple of months ago to get the opportunity to go work in the White House. I got to know the president and some of the staff during the campaign and had expressed interest in working there, so I’m going to be the associate director in the White House office of public liaison. They do outreach with the American public and with different organizations. They’re basically the front door of the White House. They take out all of the red tape that falls between the general public and the White House. It’s similar to what I was doing on the campaign.
