96.9 Boston Talks’ Jim and Margery hosted the first radio debate of the new year between the three candidates in the race for Senator on Tuesday. Attorney General Martha Coakley, State Senator Scott Brown, and Independent Candidate Joseph L. Kennedy are vying for the late Edward Kennedys Senate seat in the special election on January 19, 2010.

With the Massachusetts Senate race tightening, tonight’s televised debate between Democrat Martha Coakley and Republican Scott Brown took on more aggressive tone.

The Boston Herald reports that Coakley, who many assumed would have an easy path to victory in the Democratic state, shot back at Brown over his claims that she would raise taxes if elected while trying to get him to say whether he would support continuing the Bush tax cuts.

“It’s not a yes or no answer, and I’m not going to play a yes or no game,” Brown said. Coakley sharply responded, “If you’re not going to say yes or no, then I don’t want to hear your answer. Thanks.”

Ooh sounds snarky!

Coakley also said she didn’t agree with the polls showing Brown only behind 9 points. “I think everyone will see where we are on Jan. 19,” she said.

Independent candidate Joe Kennedy also participated in the debate, but the Herald says he “remained mostly on the sidelines.” The debate, taped earlier today, aired tonight in the state on WGBY public television. The final televised debate is scheduled for Monday night.
