Chuck Grassley (R-IA) Winterset, IA health care town hall: Opening Remarks…

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Courtesy of theGazetteOnline:

Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley makes his opening comments at a town hall meeting in Winterset, Iowa, on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009.

Since Sen Grassley is the lead negotiator with Max Baucus (D-MT) on the Senate Finance Cmte I hope to God he means what he says in his opening remarks here. Clearly he knows what his constituents wanted to hear, let us hope he lives up to what he is saying.

Will post more video as it comes in…

Hell’s Grannies: Congress Critters continue to call cops on peaceful constituents; is this a ‘teachable moment’?

Update: Coverage up at Ace and HA. HA notes these grannies were for single payer. Either way, without an ACORN sign or Al Sharpton apparently you get the boot…

You KNOW they would NEVER EVER call the cops on ACORN demonstrators, despite how rowdy and disruptive many of those demonstrations get, it would be raaaacist! But let a group of Senior Citizens sit in a conference room and ask to discuss the health care bill and they SET the MAN on their elderly axxes…unreal….keep up the heat! Gee you think Feinstein will invite the office staffers and the Seniors to sit down for a beer together?

SFGate via Drudge:

Police were called on a group of retirees who refused to leave Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s West Los Angeles office until she talked to them about health care reform. Los Angeles police Sergeant Rich Brunson said Thursday that police lured the group of seven outside somehow, then locked the building’s doors behind them. ..

A spokeswoman for the 55- to 87-year-old activists said they arrived at Feinstein’s office around noon and remained in her conference room more than six hours. Feinstein spokesman Gil Duran says staff offered the retirees an in-person meeting with the senator during a Los Angeles visit next week but that they demanded to speak with her immediately.

After referring to CONSTITUENT’s emails to OUR congressperson’s Chiefs of Staff as SPAM, Politico has another front page piece on the Town Hall’s at which REAL, unpaid, non-professional, non ‘community organizers’, have been appearing to voice our concerns with the out of control spending, in which they portray the Congress Critters (Dems) as put upon, and the PEOPLE as rabble rousers. But when the neoprogs organize it is ‘grass roots’. Uh huh. I cannot WAIT for 2010….send these people who do not even feel obligated to talk to us, or read our emails or read the damn legislation they pass, out of DC on a rail!

Alex Isenstadt:  Screaming constituents, protesters dragged out by the cops, congressmen fearful for their safety — welcome to the new town-hall-style meeting, the once-staid forum that is rapidly turning into a house of horrors for members of Congress.

On the eve of the August recess, members are reporting meetings that have gone terribly awry, marked by angry, sign-carrying mobs and disruptive behavior. In at least one case, a congressman has stopped holding town hall events because the situation has spiraled so far out of control. “I had felt they would be pointless,” Rep. Tim Bishop (D-N.Y.) told POLITICO, referring to his recent decision to temporarily suspend the events in his Long Island district. “There is no point in meeting with my constituents and [to] listen to them and have them listen to you if what is basically an unruly mob prevents you from having an intelligent conversation.” In Bishop’s case, his decision came on the heels of a June 22 event he held in Setauket, N.Y., in which protesters dominated the meeting by shouting criticisms at the congressman for his positions on energy policy, health care and the bailout of the auto industry. Within an hour of the disruption, police were called in to escort the 59-year-old Democrat — who has held more than 100 town hall meetings since he was elected in 2002 — to his car safely.

We posted this Bishop town hall video and it was very calm, rational constituents challenging his talking points, there was no ‘danger’. What a tool!

Flashback: October – Obama claims McCain will cut Medicare if elected…

TOTUS ran ads suggesting MAC would cut Medicare, and now he wants over 600 Billion in cuts. Here is Obama on October 17th saying MAC would cut Medicare, the hypocrisy is astounding:

Courtesy of AP, TOTUS promoters extraordinaire! How does NO ONE comment on this?!

Barack Obama accused John McCain of wanting to cut $882 billion from Medicare on Friday, and claims that would mean seniors pay more for drugs, receive fewer services and get lower quality care. (Oct. 17)

Obama lied, don’t let grandma die. CALL YOUR CRITTERS.

Health Care Action: Speak Now or Forever Hold Your…Prostate

IMHO, TOTUS’ ego will not allow him to let this go. Especially after he gets a load of the WaPo piece by Matt Welch and Nick Gillespie that points out Obama is nothing like Big Dawg, (which is how he sold himself, as a pro business moderate Dem). He is instead Carter – on Steroids (something we have been saying since the primaries):

Former President Jimmy Carter looks out the door of the West Wing as he leaves the White House in Washington, Wednesday, March 18, 2009, after meeting with President Barack Obama's National Security Adviser James Jones. (AP Photo/Ron Edmonds)

…Barely six months into his presidency, Barack Obama seems to be driving south into that political speed trap known as Carter Country: a sad-sack landscape in which every major initiative meets not just with failure but with scorn from political allies and foes alike….Obama must be furtively reviewing the history of recent Democratic administrations for some kind of road map out of his post-100-days ditch.

So far, he seems to be skipping the chapter on Bill Clinton and his generally free-market economic policies and instead flipping back to the themes and comportment of Jimmy Carter…

…According to a recent Washington Post-ABC News poll, more than 80 percent are concerned that health-care reform will increase costs or diminish the quality of care. Even as two House committees passed a reform bill last week, the director of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office warned that the proposal “significantly expands the federal responsibility for health-care costs” and dramatically raises the cost “curve.” This sort of voter and expert feedback can’t be comforting to the president….

When TOTUS reads this part, he will eat his liver and insist Health Care be put through so he can declare a pyrrhic victory over Hillary:

…Finally, it’s time to connect the poster boy for hope to the original Man From Hope. After Bill Clinton bit off more domestic policy than even he could chew, leading to a Republican rout in the midterm elections of 1994, the 42nd president refocused his political intelligence on keeping his ambitions and, as a result, the size of government growth, limited. Though there is much to complain about in his record, the broad prosperity and mostly sound economic policy under his watch aren’t included.

This shouldn’t be a difficult task for Obama. As a political animal, he has always resembled Clinton more than Carter. This might help him avoid the Carteresque pileup he’s driving into. Far more important, it just might help the rest of us.

Let us note here that when Hill pushed for UHC in ’93 there was NO SCHIP. Millions of American children went without health care. When her UHC plan failed, Hill got SCHIP done and now millions of American children that need coverage get it. I am not willing to give up my family’s health care and health insurance as we know it to enroll 15 million people who are already eligible and simply not enrolled while bankrupting the country and killing the economy with tax hikes in the face of a sustained recession with a flat recovery. That is what this plan to GUT Medicare and redistribute the health care to other people will do.

It is unacceptable and should be defeated in Congress. (I support Wyden-Bennett (see our write ups here) which will actually expand coverage with free market principles and not gut Medicare or kill the economy and in particular small business and jobs and change the delivery of health care as we know it while failing to control costs which are generated, as CBO acknowledges, by DEMOGRAPHICS…

Look at this chart one more time:

This is so important for our economy and our children and our parents and our lives (literally) that I am linking Dick Morris

From PoliGazette commenter Klegan, via Instapundit:

“Seeing his popularity draining away rapidly, President Obama has cynically decided to ram through the complex health care legislation in two weeks, without debate or amendment. He is going to give up the attempt to win sixty votes in the Senate and will use the budget reconciliation procedure – which is only used for budget bills – to push it through with fifty votes.” http://www.dickmorris.com/blog/

Health Care: Video Update: Flashback – Dems on Medicare Cuts: TOTUS prepares to throw trial lawyers unda da bus…

Most important update – contact your Congress Critters!

Update: And I have another common sense question here, when parents divorce often a QMCSO Qualified Medical Child Support Order is issued by the court ordering parents to cover the children to age 18, you know like normal people do in America, the age of attainment being 18. Well if TOTUS MANDATES covering these ‘children’ to age 26, I for one would expect that the court would have to come back for that and readdress the issue.

Who is paying for this ‘child’s” coverage after age 18 when the parents are divorced?

So now we have to deal with our EXes for another 8 years after the kids are legally emancipated? Good luck getting deadbeat parents who dont pay child support to age 18 now to insure their children for 8 years BEYOND the attainment of adulthood….

more work for those backed up child support courts in the making…so cheeto eating Obots can coast til they are 26?! ugh

Frakkin ridiculous is what it is, no doubt TOTUS was in law school until age 26 and that is how he came up with this number, TOTALLY UNFEASIBLE IN PRACTICE..much like socialism..hmmmm….

Video from VerumSerum by way of Ed at HA:

Follow us at: twitter.com/verumserum. While President Bush was in office, the Democrats spoke out vehemently against any proposed cuts in Medicare & Medicaid. Now that President Obama has proposed $622B in Medicare/Medicaid cuts to help pay for his healthcare plan, where are the Democrats now?

This is a rant zone….

BWAAAAAAHAAAAAA!!!!

OMG!! Hillyarious!!!!!

To sell Obamacare, TOTUS is going to tell the AMA that he will pass or enact some sort of ‘best practices’ protections for them…not a cap on medical malpractice verdicts which would be the only real way to reduce those unneccessary expenses they are so concerned about….

…There have been indications Obama has been quietly making a case for reducing malpractice lawsuits to help control costs, long a goal of the AMA and Republicans.Obama has not endorsed capping jury awards Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., said Monday that controlling the cost of malpractice insurance would have to be a part of the Obama administration’s overhaul of the health care system.

Daschle… said much of the unnecessary annual health care cost can be attributed to doctors ordering extra tests and taking extra precautions to make sure “they aren’t sued.”…

Politico covers what TOTUS is expected to say to the AMA here

…AMA President Nancy Nielsen said Sunday that the group is looking for a fix to the Medicare payment system that has cut doctor fees, and medical liability reform that puts caps on noneconomic damages.

The Obama administration outlined an additional $313 billion in new proposed savings Friday to pay for the president’s health care plan

. The savings would come from cutting or reducing the growth of payments to hospitals, medical equipment manufacturers and laboratories – though the major cuts don’t target doctors, White House budget director Peter Orszag said Friday….

Whenever Peter Orzsag is going on and on and on about how some states like Wisconsin use less medical care and how they plan to get the rest of the states to act like WI, I laugh and wonder how many doctors are in WI, how many specialists, what is their civil litigation system like there, how strong are their personal injury med mal attorneys lobbying groups there, what is the demographic of those living there….THOSE are the differences no doubt..

AZ and FL likely have many more hospital admissions cuz AZ and FL have many retirees who …you know…. get ill… b/c they are …you know…. older….Orzsag wants to stop what he calls ‘unnecessary readmissions to hospitals in the last 6 months of life’ which he claims do not show a better result than states like WI where apparently people arent so pesky about calling 911 when the elderly stop breathing or something…

Uhmm no thanks I will pass on having a pencil necked geek decide if I need to be readmitted. Hospitals are already wigging out over Team TOTUS proposed cuts…

..For instance, Obama wants to cut federal payments to hospitals by about $200 billion and cut $313 billion from Medicare and Medicaid over 10 years. He also is proposing a $635 billion “down payment” in tax increases and spending cuts in the health care system…

How will TOTUS stop lawsuits against hospitals and physicians who refuse to readmit a patient who THEN DIES? they cannot, they cannot legislate away the right to sue apparently and they are unwilling to cap verdicts cuz lawyers lobby too hard and donate too much…

thus the tests will continue, and I for one am perfectly fine with that..

Many Gen Yers who like the proposal may not remember the absolute nightmare that was HMOs before states started passing coverage mandates..

Anyone else here have to pay for their pesky anesthesia during labor? I did in 89. Yep, 42 HOURS OF LABOR and the HMO said the anesthesia was not medically necessary, thus I paid for it. I was also almost kicked out of the hospital in 24 hours after having my  baby because the HMOs used to do that to CONTAIN COSTS..sound familiar? yeah it is the Orszag Plan.

States and even the feds then MANDATED a length of hospital stay for women after giving birth to put an end to that. That is where we are headed. Every time the Medical Panel of SOOPERGENIUSES decides to limit something, some lobbyists will find the patient group or vice versa and Congress Critters will act..

This will ADD to administrative expenses as all states become as overly regulated as California and more manual claims processing becomes necessary to keep up with all the rule changes….

I worked for a PI Med Mal Wrongful Death firm in NYC for a time. One patient who was in her 20s was obese. She had a persistent cough. Her PCP, mindful of his HMO handlers, did NOT send her to an outpatient facility for a portable chest xray and she did not fit in the xray machine in the HMO radiologists office. So he said she had bronchitis and gave her an RX. Long story short. She had cancer, it went undiagnosed for too long and she was terminal.  God Bless her. They should have referred her for the damned xray.

I do not believe this is the way to go with our health care system. Letting the elderly go untreated to save money is the plan. Sheboresus slid around it like an eel this weekend, it is rationing and Americans won’t stand for it. If they get it through, we will simply see massive scandal later when people die after being denied testing and treatment..

…Kathleen Sebelius ducked on Sunday when John King ask her about the prospect of comparative effectiveness research as a slippery slope toward medical rationing.

“There is fabulous health care being delivered at lower costs all across America,” she replied in an appearance on “State of the Union.” “Comparative effectiveness research says, ‘does paying twice as much in McAllen,Texas, as in some other part of the country deliver better care?’ And the answer is ‘no.'”

She added, “If three tests don’t produce a better result than one test produces, I’d rather have the one test, thank you very much.”

TOTUS CANNOT promise best practices protection! He cannot get it through Congress which is HEAVILY lobbied by the Bar association and the entity previously known as the Trial Lawyers Association. Just go ask Johnny Edwards about a doctor NOT DOING a test..he will dance all the way to his 140,000 sf house…

This TOTUS plan would have the additional liability of limiting economies of scale in many diagnostic tests. If the test isnt done more and more the price wont drop and the technology wont get better..this will kill promising new gene therapy also, if Team TOTUS wont pay for granny to get a new hip they certainly will not pay for all the experimentation and promising gene therapy coming from the very SCIENCE he claims to cherish….what was the point of the stem cell testing if the pesky elderly cannot have the gene therapy for Alzheimers?

What government panel will find it cost effective to cure someone who has Alzheimers? How much work or tax dollars can they get from that elderly person?

Scary.

Health Care Update: MedPAC Expansion: Obama moves to control Medicare costs…and with it all private insurance benefits…

Are you ready Boomers? One year ago Hillary was pushed out of the race, now Obama has decided to do the universal mandate after all (his letter to Kennedy and Baucus makes it sound like it is HIS brilliant idea to exempt the poor with subsidies, Hillary had that in there already) AND he has accepted MAC’s plan to tax health care benefits (but no sign of the 5k tax credit Mac planned to give us)….

So Baby Boomers, many of you voted for Obama, here is his plan to control health care costs, as MiM predicted he is beginning with Medicare, you pesky expensive old people

No expensive cardiac stents and multiple admissions for YOU!

..these are called in laymens terms CUTS and DENIALS OF BENEFITS, when Megyn Kelly asked Arlen Specter about the language in the stimulus setting up a comparative effectiveness panel he swore up and down it would never ever impact Americans ability to make health care decisions with their Doctors…Specter wrong again, Obama is using existing Medicare panels to cut costs, as Ezra Klein points out below, private insurers use Medicare standards to set reimbursement rates and coverage policies so this impacts all of us, and it is behind the scenes..:

Ezra Klein:

Yesterday, at a meeting between Barack Obama and Senate Democrats from the Finance and HELP committees, that line grew up and graduated into something altogether sturdier: A policy. Senate sources confirm that the president argued in favor of a genuinely major Medicare reform — a reform that could make Medicare the nation’s most important laboratory for health care reforms.

…You probably haven’t heard of MedPAC. Most people haven’t. It stands for The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission and it’s an independent congressional agency formed in 1997 to advise the Congress on matters relating to Medicare. The commission is staffed by experts who are appointed for three-year terms, and its existence is due to a simple insight: Medicare payment policy is too technical for the Congress. There aren’t five senators with an informed opinion on the “equipment use standard” for imaging machines, much less 50, and much less 100.

But what if it didn’t? What if MedPAC had power?

Health Care Update: There’s always Soylent Green….Hot Air » Are the elderly cost effective?

Vodpod videos no longer available. From HA, Congress Critters headed by Baucus today heard arguments to restrict OVERUSE of health care by ELDERLY:

Professor Stuart Altman of Brandeis University:

Remember, our population is aging. And with the very, very elderly, the costs go down, so that percentage should be falling, and it’s not. Second, the cost of care is growing by so much, so at the same percentage, it’s worth a lot more. So let’s go back to the issue of comparative effectiveness, which we’re supporting. That’s where that can have a big impact. It’s not only there, but that’s where the waste is. That’s where people are using technologies that really either don’t work at all or keep people alive for for very limited [time] and [at] very high cost. Hospice is one option, but we do need take account of the cost —

you know, I hate to say it, the cost-benefit of some of the things we do. And either we can do it directly, or we can do it by bundling the payments and let the delivery system deal with it. So it’s a combination of the delivery system dealing with it, or, and/or providing more information for people to make the right decisions, both for themselves and for the care.

See for these loons the RIGHT DECISION is to die, push people off on an ice floe when they have outlived their usefulness to society..of course these same people want to give this care to people who are in quite a few cases also not productive members of the working economy, but that’s okay I guess…..unfrakkinbelievable, hope the Baby Boomers who voted for this are taking note, your children in GEN X a-hem will be taxed to death and unable to support you as Team Obama denies your hip replacement (he mentioned in a NYT interview he wonders if it  was really the RIGHT THING for his typical white grandma to get her hip replaced shortly before she died..me, I think that was Granny and her doctor’s decision…..
