New Obama motto: If at first you don’t succeed, spend, spend again. Wants *ANOTHER* $50B in bailouts…

Our sign at the Tax Day Tea Party April 15th '09, now 15 months later and they have no plan other than throwing more money around

Lesson from the massive MISSPENT stimulus not learned. The states didn’t tighten their belts and now they are out of money again.

Calculated Risk:

From Jackie Calmes and Sheryl Gay Stolberg at the NY Times: Obama Presses for Aid to Cities and States

President Obama on Saturday implored Congress to provide more aid to states and cities to blunt “the devastating economic impact of budget cuts” by local governments that imperil the jobs of teachers, the police, firefighters and other public employees.

In a letter to Democratic and Republican Congressional leaders, Mr. Obama said the “mounting employment crisis” in the states “could set back the pace of our economic recovery.” … education secretary, Arne Duncan, has said that without federal aid, up to 300,000 fewer teachers would be in classrooms this fall …

We the people have been IMPLORING Congress to STOP SPENDING for over a year now…

The INCREASE in Medicaid enrollment was UNAFFORDABLE. But in AZ when we tried to ROLL BACK our Medicaid enrollment we were told we will LOSE the FED $ if we do.

This $50B bailout Obama wants represents those same federal dollars, the ones that *aren’t THERE!* Let them vote it down and we can cut the enrollment and start getting back on a sustainable path….

PS in AZ apparently kids of illegal immigrants are dropping out of our overpopulated, bursting with English as a Second Language classes (which courts mandate we fund).

So IOW, less kids right? So we can afford less teachers….keep your money D.C. you’re gonna need it, cuz NO WAY, NO HOW, NO VAT.

…• Mesa Public Schools, the state’s largest unified district, has 67,749 students, and Latino students make up 37.5 percent. It anticipates a decrease of 1,500 students, similar to losses over the past four years. It blames a combination of new immigration laws, including SB 1070, and the recession.

• Paradise Valley Unified District in Phoenix, where nearly a quarter of its 33,431 students are Latino, hasn’t seen a large drop in total enrollment.

“A lot of our students go to Mexico for the summer, and we’re speculating they may not come back,” spokeswoman Judi Willis said. “But we don’t know.”

• Enrollment at Glendale Union High School District, where about half of its 14,940 students are Latino, has held steady, but the number of students signing up for English-language summer school has fallen. High-school districts are less likely to feel the loss because older kids are more likely to stay behind with friends and relatives, said Craig Pletenik, spokesman for Phoenix Union High School, where more than three-fourths of the district’s 25,083 students are Latino. “Our kids are older, and closer to the educational finish line.” The district hasn’t seen a dip in enrollment….

AZ already voted to raise our sales taxes ‘temporarily’, lol, to help Gov Brewer fill the massive hole Napolitano left. Let the states work these matters out for themselves, the way we families do when things are tight. Sorry Unions, we are NOT reimbursing you for the millions you spend in electioneering.

PS Sheriff Joe is still out ENFORCING THE LAWS OF AZ. Betcha the next stat we see drop will be AZ UE rate as AZ Teens find jobs now that they are available to them…

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s deputies on Saturday served search warrants on two Sizzler steak houses in Phoenix suspected of employing illegal immigrants.

According to a statement from Lt. Brian Lee, deputies arrested nine employees who they believe are using fraudulent identification to gain employment….

…Saturday’s arrests followed a year-long investigation into a tip from a former manager who claims he was fired by the restaurant for being unwilling to hire employees without proper identification, Lee said…

And more state laws are coming:

..We learned recently that state Sen. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, will propose a law that would deny a birth certificate to any child born in Arizona to non-citizen parents.

Now, along with other legislators, Pearce says he will introduce a law requiring students who are here illegally to pay tuition or be kicked out of public schools.

“They shouldn’t be a burden,” Pearce recently told the Capitol Times. “You don’t have a right to be a non-resident of this state and take advantage of the taxpayers of this state.”…

Update: Gutierrez (D-IL) asks Obama to ‘intervene’; Kyl & McCain call for 3k Nat’l Guard troops at border; AZ Illegal Immigration enforcement bill goes to Gov Brewer for signature by Sunday to enact…

Update: Oh look Luis Gutierrez (d-il)  is pulling Obama’s chain again on immigration, Is it gonna be Kerry and Cap and Tax or Gutierrez and immigration this May? and with  Grahamnesty on both!? This will hurt MACs campaign… tick-tock..

Hispanic lawmakers want President Barack Obama to intervene if Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer doesn’t veto a sweeping illegal immigration bill that would require police to stop anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant.

“The governor of Arizona should veto the bill, and if she doesn’t the president of the United States, Barack Obama, should assert the federal government’s preeminent role in regulating and enforcing our nation’s immigration law,” Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), said Tuesday.

A senior administration official said the White House was studying the bill….

Update: Video added

Update: Sen Kyl and MAC (in his continuing evolution to ‘tuff’ on illegal immigration) outlined a 10 point plan to secure the southern border yesterday h/t AZ StarNet:

10-step border security action plan unveiled by Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl:

• Immediately deploy 3,000 National Guard troops along the Arizona-Mexico border and add 3,000 Custom and Border Protection agents to the Arizona-Mexico border by 2015.

• Fund and support Operation Streamline in Arizona’s two Border Patrol sectors to ensure that repeat illegal border crossers go to jail for 15 to 60 days.

• Provide $100 million, an increase of $40 million, for Operation Stonegarden, a program that provides funds to Arizona’s border law enforcement for additional costs related to illegal immigration and drug smuggling.

• Offer hardship-duty pay to Border Patrol agents assigned to rural, high trafficking areas.

• Complete the 700 miles of fencing along the U.S. border with Mexico and construct double- and triple-layer fencing at appropriate locations along the border.

• Increase the 25 mobile surveillance systems and three Predator B aerial drones in place along the Arizona-Mexico border. Send additional fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters to the Arizona-Mexico border.

• Increase funding for vital radio communications and interoperability between agencies.

• Provide funding for additional Border Patrol stations in the Tucson Sector and explore the possibility of an additional Border Patrol sector for Arizona. Create six additional permanent Border Patrol forward operating bases, and provide funding to upgrade the existing bases to include modular buildings, electricity and potable water. Complete construction of the planned permanent checkpoint in Arizona. Deploy additional temporary roving checkpoints.

• Require the federal government to fully reimburse state and local governments for the costs of incarcerating criminal aliens.

• Place one full-time federal magistrate in Cochise County and provide full funding for and authorization of the Southwest Border Prosecution Initiative to reimburse state, county, tribal, and municipal governments for costs associated with the prosecution and pretrial detention of federally-initiated criminal cases declined by local offices of the U.S. attorneys.

Senate gave the final approval to some changes and the bill is now with the Governor waiting for signature. I sent her an email asking her to sign it and letting her know that hubby and I although lifelong Dems support this bill. Never hurts to let a pol who is running for office know they have bipartisan support on an issue! Hopefully she will sign it.

AZDailySun:

The question of whether police will be required to ask people if they are in this country legally is now in the hands of Gov. Jan Brewer. On a 17-11 margin Monday, the state Senate gave final approval to a package of changes in state law that proponents say will help crack down on illegal immigration. Sen. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, the architect of the plan, said state action is necessary because of the political failure in Washington to secure the border.

While some changes are minor, like making it a crime to stop in traffic to solicit a day laborer, the heart of the bill is aimed at what Pearce said is “removing the handcuffs” from local police.

To that end, SB 1070 would overrule any policy or procedure of a city council or police department that keeps officers from enforcing federal immigration laws. It also says that, when practicable, police must inquire about the immigration status of those they encounter as part of their regular activities.

And to ensure compliance, the legislation permits anyone who believes police aren’t doing all they should to file suit, with judges required to impose fines of up to $5,000 a day if the citizen suit succeeds.

It also lets police arrest illegal immigrants and charge them with the state crime of not carrying their visas or resident alien documents issued by the U.S. government….

Key provisions of SB 1070

— Prohibits any government agency or official from restricting enforcement of immigration laws “to less than the full extent permitted by federal law.”

— In situations where “reasonable suspicion exists” someone is in this country illegally, “a reasonable attempt shall be made, when practicable, to determine the immigration status of the person” except if it would hinder or obstruct an investigation.

— Says police “may not solely consider race, color or national origin.”

Back in the saddle again: AZ Illegal Immigration enforcement bill passes legislature, to Gov. Brewer for signature…

We covered this legislation when it passed the State Senate here. It has now passed the state House and goes to Brewer to sign.

We have covered the Obama rollback of Sheriff Joe’s 287G enforcement authorities here.

This legislation helps restore and clarify that Sheriff Joe is indeed carrying out the laws of Arizona when he is enforcing illegal immigration violations.

WSJ has it:

Arizona lawmakers on Tuesday passed one of the toughest pieces of immigration-enforcement legislation in the country, which would make it a violation of state law to be in the U.S. without proper documentation.

It would also grant police the power to stop and verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being illegal.

…Under the measure, passed Tuesday by Arizona’s lower house, after being passed earlier by the state Senate, foreign nationals are required to carry proof of legal residency….

…The bill is different from an earlier version, giving protections for church and community organizations from criminal prosecution for transporting or harboring illegal immigrants.

In a statement, Tuesday Rep. John Kavanagh (R-Fountain Hills) called the measure “a comprehensive immigration enforcement bill that addresses the concerns of our communities, constituents and colleagues.”

“This updated version gives our local police officers the tools they need to combat illegal immigration, while protecting the civil rights of citizens and legal residents.”…

…The bill in some ways toughens up a situation that the Obama administration had tried to roll back. Under a program known as 287g, some local law enforcement agencies were trained to enforce federal immigration laws by checking suspects’ immigration status.

Mr. Arpaio, the Maricopa county sheriff, had been one of the most aggressive enforcers of 287g. However, the Obama administration in recent months has sought to scale back that program, and had reduced the resources it made available to Mr. Arpaio’s office and others.

Sheriff Joe can get comfy being back in the saddle again enforcing the law…

Rasmussen: Sheriff Joe is strongest GOP candidate for AZ Governor, beats Dem 51-39…

Well I am all for him.  The Justice Department is all over the Sheriff like a cheap suit on a single complaint, one, making a Federal Case out of it, literally. Apparently they don’t want law enforcement to LOOK for illegal immigrants anywhere, not at work sites, not in Latino neighborhoods. No word on where exactly they Do think the MCSO should be looking. I think we all get the idea, they don’t want us enforcing that particular set of laws. That worked so well in California. They revoked our MCSO 287G ICE enforcement authority so the Sheriff is operating under our state law, which we the people voted on. Arizonans are aware we need someone to enforce our state laws over the objections of the Federales, and that is evident in this polling. See our previous posts on Sheriff Joe Arpaio here. Go Joe!

Rasmussen:

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is the Republicans’ best shot at holding onto the Arizona governorship in 2010 against likely Democratic candidate Terry Goddard.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Arizona voters finds Arpaio, famed for his crackdowns on illegal immigrants, leading Goddard, the state’s current attorney general, by 12 points – 51% to 39%. Seven percent (7%) prefer some other candidate, and four percent (4%) are undecided.

Embattled incumbent Republican Jan Brewer, who stepped up to the governorship from secretary of state when Janet Napolitano became secretary of Homeland Security, trails Goddard by nine points – 44% to 35%. In that match-up, nine percent (9%) like another candidate. Twelve percent (12%) are not sure whom they’ll vote for.

Another possible GOP candidate, State Treasurer Dean Martin, is in a virtual tie with Goddard. The Democrat beats Martin 40% to 38%, with 11% opting for some other candidate and another 11% undecided.

Of the four, Brewer is the only announced candidate so far.

Update 5: Sheriff Joe on Americas Newsroom; Videos fixed:Pt 3 & 4 of Sheriff Joe presser added; DHS batting 1000: awards 1 million in firefighting funds to..ACORN! DHS strips Maricopa County Sheriffs of their 287G agent status: Sheriff Joe Press Conference..

Videos update

Nice work Janet! Our former  Arizona Governor, now head of DHS, strips our county sheriffs of their 287G authority. Way to keep the borders open…Our previous posts on the program, and ACORN, Rev Al Sharpton and Holder’s politicized attempts to end it  here.

Sheriff Joe, as always, pulls no punches. He says this is purely political, he backs that up with evidence, they have finally gotten the DHS Audit report (from back channels) MCSO got an A+ and they are still the only agency having their agent status stripped away.  Sheriff Joe makes it clear the WH is playing politics with local law enforcement and the safety of Arizonans and ALL AMERICANS as they leave our border wide open.

Sheriff Joe is represented by the former head of the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Dept. He got the complaint opened of the much reported ; FBI investigations for profiling’ CNN et al covered. One complaint was filed on Sheriff Joe with the FBI AZ AIC , it was filed by Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon (see our April 2008 post of MCSO Deputies saying ‘Mayor Gordon shut up. How dare you call us racist!?!’)

Recall it was Bertha Lewis and ACORN who got this ball rolling,. At whose instructions I wonder?? Who has an interest in our illegal population dropping 30% as they prepare amnesty for a presumed permanent voting bloc? Yeah exactly. Again politics ahead of national security in Team TOTUS.

AZ brave MCSO has MiM’s full support. Sheriff Joe is our sheriff and we are proud of him. He is currently enjoying his fifth term here and has wonderful approval ratings.

Update 4: The Corner notes the 1 mill ‘firefighting’ grant to ACORN is now frozen:

From The Hill:

The Federal Emergency Management Agency on Tuesday announced it would halt its $1 million fire prevention grant to ACORN — a decision Republican lawmakers have since praised.

The Department of Homeland Security initially earmarked the money for ACORN before House and Senate lawmakers mobilized to cut the group’s access to federal dollars. But news of the award emerged much later, after the ACORN furor had subsided.

Update 3: Part III of Sheriff’s Joe presser yesterday, the Q/A:

Update 2: DHS awarded 1 million in firefighting grant funds to ACORN. DHS is totally off the rails of the Crazy Train. I would rather have OZZY run it than Napolitano if she is so WEAK she wont protect the border and doles out grant funds to corrupt vote garnering organizations

Nearly $1 million in Homeland Security funding typically earmarked for fire departments has been awarded to ACORN, despite a clear signal from Congress that it intends to cut off federal funding to the embattled group.

The grant to ACORN’s Louisiana office became public on Oct. 2, less than three weeks after the House and Senate voted to cut off ACORN funding after employees were caught on video advising a fake prostitute and pimp on scams.

It was one of only three such grants issued to the state and made up almost 80 percent of the firefighting money earmarked for Louisiana, prompting one of the U.S. senators from the state to demand that the funds be taken back.

“I request that you rescind this grant based on a history of abuse of federal dollars by ACORN and their clear lack of expertise in this area,” said Sen. David Vitter, Louisiana Republican….

Update: WSJ covers:

The Obama administration is curbing the powers of an Arizona sheriff who has led one of the most contentious fights against illegal immigrants.

Under an agreement involving local enforcement of federal immigration law, Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s deputies will no longer have the authority to arrest suspected illegal immigrants in the streets in the course of their duty……Unlike others participating in the program, Mr. Arpaio will be restricted to determining the immigration status of inmates booked into Maricopa County jails. Vincent Picard, an ICE spokesman in Phoenix, declined to comment. ICE is a unit of the Department of Homeland Security.

…Since February 2007, Mr. Arpaio has arrested about 30,000 illegal immigrants who were booked into jails in his county…”They took away my authority on the streets. That doesn’t matter because I will still pursue illegals on the streets of Maricopa utilizing the authority I have as the elected official,” Mr. Arpaio said Tuesday in an interview…
