Joss Whedon talks Dollhouse cancellation, Dr Horrible sequel and more; plus Eliza Dushku teases final Dollhouse episodes…

Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune has the must read interview, read the entire thing. (Joss also goes in depth into his future plans which seem to not include network tv and who could blame him?):

…Whedon said he’s proud of what the his cast, writers and crew accomplished and opined that some of the episodes coming up are “ridiculously good” (and even if you’ve never seen the show before, it’s worth tuning in Friday’s episodes just to see Summer Glau’s spellbindingly creepy character and to see Enver Gjokaj demonstrate, once again, his breathtaking versatility).

But Whedon also talked about how he has been “frustrated” by Fox’s skittishness when it came to what he thought would be one of the show’s central concepts: The exploration of sexuality and intimacy, in all its forms.

“The problems that the show encountered weren’t standalone versus mythology [episodes],” Whedon said. “Basically, the show didn’t really get off the ground because the network pretty much wanted to back away from the concept five minutes after they bought it. And then ultimately, the show itself is also kind of odd and difficult to market. I actually think they did a good job, but it’s just not a slam-dunk concept.”

Much more after the break:

BSGcast: ‘The Plan’ review

By Mat and Nat at BSGcast:

http://BSGcast.com for a chance to win dinner with Admiral Adama! Jane Espenson and Edward James Olmos were the people in charge on this one: Olmos was there for every episode that went into making The Plan happen in Season 2, and Jane was there for none of them and it shows.

Update: Dollhouse ratings tank again, hit season low: drops 20% from last episode; Smallville ties ABC for third place, hits season high…

Update: Promo for December epis, Summer! 2.5 The Public Eye, 2.6 The Left Hand:

Update: Just caught last night’s Dollhouse ‘Belonging’ on FoxonDemand. Have to agree with SciFiWire (link below) it was the best of the season so far. Sadly Joss aired absolute dreck in his first few episodes this season and has now lost the eyeballs. Next time you get a golden chance from a network and are brought back from the dead use it wisely!

SciFiWire: A first look at guest star Summer Glau (left, with Eliza Dushku) from the upcoming episode "The Left Hand"

SciFiWire: A first look at guest star Summer Glau (left, with Eliza Dushku) from the upcoming episode "The Left Hand"

Last night was supposed to be one of the ‘good’ episodes too, per SciFiWire..Kind of sucks that Summer has not even made her first appearance yet and cancellation is in the air, but Joss wasted his first few epis this season (ESPECIALLY the breast feeding epi, ugh!) and now Dollhouse ratings are in the tank..

THR Live Feed:

(…)In its final episode before its sweeps hiatus, “Dollhouse” (2.1 million, 0.8) was down 20% in the demo from its last episode two weeks ago.I’m hesitant to make any declarations about the fate “Dollhouse.” Though I broke the news last season that Fox was renewing the show, that decision surprised me as much as anybody. So keeping in mind that in this new wacky ratings universe broadcast shows drawing under a 2.0 are getting renewals, it is really tough to see “Dollhouse” continuing beyond the current episode order.

Good news for “Smallville” (2.5 million, 1.1) fans, though. The show matched last week’s season high (which also held up in the nationals, btw). That means The CW tied ABC for third place at 8 p.m. (18-49 is not their sales demo, but they still keep an eye on it). Regardless of the network’s mixed feelings about “Smallville,” any show that gets the network out of fifth place among the industry’s standard measurement is tough to ignore. So after climbing significantly to reach season highs for two weeks in a row, does that mean it’s time to update The Live Feed’s TV Series Survival Status Report? I think so…..

FOX pulls Dollhouse off air for November (sweeps)…

dollhouse-cast

They shoot horses don’t they? Sorry but Joss’ talents are IMO better used elsewhere (anywhere!). If TSCC wasn’t good enough for renewal with ratings and DVR FAR AND AWAY above Dollhouse to date this season, then Dollhouse isn’t good enough to be on the air. They should’ve killed Dollhouse and pushed TSCC back to air in Dollhouse’s slot, TSCC was way too dark for the early hour FOX had it on…..(disclaimer, I am one of those rabid TSCC fans! but I am a Firefly fan too! not sure WTH FOX expects to do about us, they must figure they are screwed as either way we’re pixxed, lol! They don’t get it is the QUALITY of the show, the WRITING, the CAST, the PREMISE, not just that it is Joss! TSCC and Firefly were worlds better , universes better! Maybe someone can get Josh Friedman and Joss Whedon to work together on something and then that network/cable channel can have all the scifi fans in one group, lol)

And they screwed Summer Glau here a bit, they ran a promo saying three weeks to Summer’s Dollhouse episodes and now they aren’t going to air those until after November?!

SciFiWire has rounded up the dish:

Fox can’t seem to make up its mind about Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse. On the one hand, it renews it despite some of the lowest ratings ever. Then it buries it on Friday night, where its ratings continue to plummet before stabilizing. Then it decides to air all 13 season-two episodes once it’s clear a lot of people are watching it on DVRs.

But now comes word that it’s pulling it from the schedule entirely during the all-important month of November, the so-called “sweeps” period when the network tries to boost ratings to set its advertising rates.

Entertainment Weekly‘s Michael Ausiello tweeted the news first:

@EWAusielloFiles Exclusive: Hearing FOX will bench DOLLHOUSE for November sweeps and air back-to-back eps on Friday night in December….

Then the FutonCritic chimed in:

Network sources have confirmed Friday entries “Brothers,” “‘Til Death” and “Dollhouse” will all go on hiatus after their October 23 airings. A rebroadcast of “House’s” two-hour season premiere will sub in for the night on October 30 with additional repeats of “House” and “Bones” taking over for the rest of the month. “Dollhouse” will then return with back-to-back originals starting at 8:00/7:00c on December 4, 11 and 18.

This sounds a lot like Fox has decided to burn off the new episodes it just ordered…

Sounds to me like the suits at FOX are trying to protect Dollhouse from EPIC FAIL during sweeps after which they would be FORCED to cancel it. Unreal. What is the deal, why are they holding this loser up? Whose zoomin who?
