Marvel shareholders approve Disney merger
Yay! (we are DIS shareholders. See our previous post on the merger here)
The deal will give Disney Marvel’s more than 5,000 characters and its licensing, comic book and movie business. Disney’s paying $4.3 billion dollars for the company, a price that’s risen along with Disney’s stock price since the deal was announced in August; stockholders receive $30 per share in cash plus .745 Disney shares for each Marvel share. Now we’ll be watching to see which Marvel Characters Disney pulls out and puts in the spotlight and when the comic book characters will start showing up in the theme parks. One place Marvel’s characters are sure to show up fairly soon is Disney XD, a new successful cable channel targeting boys.
The deal ties Disney to rival media giants, as Marvel is committed to deals with other media companies. Marvel and Sony Pictures Entertainment are in a joint venture for Spider-Man merchandise, and Sony is making Spider-Man 4, due out in 2011. Marvel also has a distribution deal with Paramount Pictures for its next five films, including “Iron Man 2,” (expected to be the biggest film next year) and “Thor” .. . And Marvel characters are licensed to Universal Orlando’s theme parks, which are owned by Blackstone and GE’s NBC Universal….
Marvel’s Thor casts Warrior’s Three, Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman also cast
I can’t wait. So glad Kenneth Branagh is doing this one. Variety has it:
“Thor” helmer Kenneth Branagh has locked Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, and Tadanobu Asano to play Warrior’s Three, a trio of Asgardian adventurers who fight alongside the Norse god in the Marvel Entertainment drama.Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston and Natalie Portman also star in the pic scripted by Mark Protosevich and Zack Stentz. Paramount Pictures will release “Thor” on May 20, 2011….
More from FirstShowing.net:
Way back before we knew that Chris Hemsworth had been cast to play Thor, one of the originally rumored candidates for the role was Alexander Skarsgard (who is currently on “True Blood”), the son of more well known actor Stellan Skarsgard. According to a report from ComingSoon (that comes from a translation of a Swedish write-up via TT Spektra in Sweden), Stellan Skarsgard revealed that he has joined the cast of Kenneth Branagh’s
Thor in a role that he can’t yet reveal. Stellan is still an incredibly talented actor and I gained even more respect for him after Pirates of the Caribbean (where he played Will Turner’s father).
The Swedish article claims “Skarsgård is ready for a role in action movie Thor” and includes this quote: “They wanted me to sign without reading the script. That I refused to do. Then they sent one to me that was so coded that I could only print one copy.” ….With Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Tom Hiddleston, and now Stellan Skarsgard, Kenneth Branagh has rounded up one hell of a great cast for Thor..
It looks like we finally have our Thor! After months and months of casting rumors, Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Australian actor Chris Hemsworth has been cast as the Norse God of Thunder. You may not know Hemsworth by name yet, but if you’ve seen Star Trek, you know his face – he played Kirk’s father George Kirk in the opening of that movie. Finke says that he got the role through some insistence on the part of his agent, and once he got on tape for a reading the second time, he was in. Hemsworth also scored the lead role in MGM’s remake of Red Dawn that’s also in development this year….
